Taylor takes landslide victory

Brand Editor
Janette Taylor a freshman from
Pampa took a landslide victory
over her opponets to become the
Freshman Class President. Taylor
racked up 124 votes on Oct 9 to
take the win while her other op-
ponets did not even receive half of
her total votes.
Taylor's closest opponet was
Mark Lamb who tallied up 49 votes
and write-in candidate Curt Pool
took 19 votes. Leland Harden and
Edward Easley totaled up 15 and
seven votes respectively.
In the race between Holly Harris
and Kathy Mahood for Freshman
Class Vice-President Mahood
from Hobbs N.M. received 48
votes while Harris turned in 56
votes from freshman students.
A run-off tookplace yesterday
between Cathy Hyatt and Julia Lee
for the office of Freshman Class
Secretary. The outcome of the run-
off election was unavailable at
press time. The two defeated
Shanta Dumas who gathered a
total of 49 votes compared to 68
and 91 votes for Hyatt and Lee
respectively.
Kay Grubbs and Dana Teer also
met In a run-off yesterday after the
girls defeated Rene' Snead for
Freshman Class Treasurer. Grubbs
and Teer took 90 and 77 votes
respectively while Snead tool 37
votes. Five freshman won seats on
the Hardln-Slmmons Student Con-
gress during the general election.
Those receiving seats include
Melody Madden Steven Poe
Shelly Swafford Randy Thompson
and Laura Wllkins. Steven Post
and Carson Ribble were narrowly
beat out for seats on the congress.
Mellnda Offner took the office of
Sophomore Class Secretary over
Dee Ann Knight and Ann Smother-
man. Offner from Fort Worth took
73 votes while Knight took 48
votes and Smotherman took 25
MCPC inducts
New members
Five new members were formal-
ly introduced during Monday's
meeting of the Moody Center Plan-
ning Committee. Kris Deady
Mellnda Wallace Bryan Walker
Karen Norton and Ruth Trice were
selected a week ago as MCPC
members and attended their first
meeting Monday.
Results of last week's MCPC-
sponsored activities were also
reported to the organization.
Hardln-Slmmons students played
a total of 84 games at Texas Putt-
ing Course during "HSU Night"
held there last Thursday. An exact
count of how many persons were

votes. There were no candidates
for Sophomore Class Secretary
during the spring elections caus-
ing. a second elecUon this fall.
Annettee Layman of New York
beat out Rick Strange in a narrow
race for Junior Class Con-
gressman. Layman totaled up 58
votes while Strange trailed by only
five votes. The congressional seat
was also not filled during the spr-
ing elections.
There was no real race in the
senior class. Linda Blakely receiv-
ed one or more votes to become
Senior Class Treasurer. She was
uncontested In the race for the of-
fice. She also received one or
more votes for Senior Class Con-
gressman as did Wes Moore. The
two were the only candidates for
the two congressional seats left
open during the spring elections.
The results of the run-off elec-
tions held yesterday will be record-
ed in next week's Issue.

Foundation recruits for HSU
The Student Foundation is one
group on campus which does not
receive heavy publicity but is very
active. Under the direction of
Foundation President Jeff Jordan
the group has been involved in
many activities. Currently the
group Is going on recruitment trips
to promote Hardln-Slmmons. Mem-
bers sacrifice weekends to go to
such areas as Dallas-Ft. Worth
Midland and other towns to pre-
sent a presentation about HSU.
The Foundation is also Involved
with alumni programs. Members
are scheduled to set up a booth at
the Texas General Convention to
greet HSU alumni and inform them
of the progress of Hardin-Slmmons
University.
Barbara Faucett is the First Vice
President of the group. She assists
Jordan and takes over the Founda-
tion in his absence. Celeste Rainey
is the Foundation's Second Vice
President and she is In charge of
the Foundation's public relations.
Stacy Strain has the job of sec-
retary for the group while Ronnie
Kidd handles the group's finances
as treasurer. Five HSU students
chair committees. Chairman of the
Parents and Alumni committee is
David Flowers and Kyle Keeter is
the Projects chairman. Brenda
Bryant is in charge of on-campus
activities while Cynthia Poulos
handles off-campus activities.
Deborah Caffey is chairman of the
Revision committee.
Sponsors James Teel and
Wayne McClellan direct the work
of the Foundation.
HSU ACL) professors to chair CCL
Two local university professors
will serve as co-chairmen of the
Region IV Conference on Chris-
tianity and Literature this year
after their election recently at the
annual conference held both at
Hardln-Slmmons and Abilene
Christian universities.
Dr. George Van Devender pro-
fessor of English at HSU and Dr.
George ewlng chairman of the
English Department at ACU were
elected In the opening session of
the two-day conference that met at
HSU Oct. 3 and ACU Oct. 4.
The main responsibilities of the
co-chairmen comprise presiding
over the business meeting at the
1981 regional conference; aiding
the chairman for arrangements
and program planning the 1981
conference; and corresponding
with the national vice president.
Dr. Van Devender was also
elected to the post of regional
representative to the national ad-
visory council. Van Devender's
responsibilities will Include work
ing with the national vice president
to develop work and outreach
among the eight regional organiza-
tions to strengthen the scope of
individual regional activity and to
aid other regional representatives.
As the Region IV representative
Van Devender has been Invited to
attend the national CCL board of
director's meeting that will be held
in conjunction with the Modern
Language Association in Houston
Dec. 28.
