STAR GAZING 2001
Inle hundreds of students traveled home
to spend I-ill 1 Bieak with friends and family
20 HSU Astronomy students accompanied
adjunct Professor Patrick Miller to lurner
Falls Oklahoma to host Star Gaing 2001
Star Gaing an annual program that began
in 1991 offers Astronoim students the chance
practice techniques learned in class in plotting
star locations and recognizing constellations
fhe students left HSU on Friday alternoon
October 19 and returned on Sunday after-
noon. October 2 1 for a total of two starr
nights in Turner Falls.
Stai Gaing 2001 activities were organized
by Patrick Miller and carried out by faculty
staff and students from HSU and Cisco Junior
College. The students were responsible for
helping students from University of North
Fexas and Brookhaven College with evening
star gaing projects. Several students were
selected as superv isors for the star gazing labs
that were conducted.
While students worked hard this weekend
most were also able to enjoy themselves and
did not regret their weekend lost to school
work.
"1 would definitely go on the trip again"
said CJC student superv isor Wesley Mason.
"We not only got to participate in astronoim
labs but geology ones as well and it was a
great opportunity to meet new people "
Another supervisor from CJC was Barbara
Max hall. Baibara was able to accompany the
students on all of the exploring opportunities
and said "This was my third trip and it was
just as exciting as the fust. I can't wait to go
again."
hile the students did have responsibili-
ties during the evenings there were fun
events planned during their off time. I avonte
moments of the trip included the opportunity
to explore a castle have a picnic by the
Turner Falls waterfall and explore a rock
quarry.
"One of the best times was staving up late
on Friday night." said Stanci llensarling
"Since the weather was pet feet and we were
faraway from city lights. Jo Lemmons and I
weie able to find constellations like Hercules
Draco Scorpio and the Summer Triangle It
was great because I am NF VFR able to find
constellations at home!"
While the tiip mostly icceived praise it
did seem to have a few low points. Martha
Bran stated "fhe trip was wonderful if you
block memories of cold showers and having
to use the boys' bathroom... which was bio-
