Gary McCaleb mayor of Abilene presented a proclamation of Feb. 19
as HSU Day. "We are all awarded by the many and varied
contributions your university brings to our city" he said. During
his closing comments Fletcher read a letter from President Bush
congratulating HSU on its centennial birthday. He also read a
letter from a recent HSU graduate who is now serving in the Middle
East and who often thinks of the people he encountered at HSU and
their impact on his life. Fletcher said "It's been a long
wonderful year trying to celebrate what our founders imagined. We
draw our strength from those who dreamed before us. We want this to
mark not the end of 100 years but the beginning of all the promise
built into this institution." Fletcher noted that God has always
provided for HSU and that many people have worked hard and
sacrificed to keep HSU alive and continually growing.
Editorial Brand editor stepping down
by Duane Simolke
You maybe asking what happened to The Brand's format. What
happened is that my- layoutdesign editor Tim Baker has said he
will no longer carry our computer to University Relations every
week where we have to print the layout on an incompatible printer
which takes hours just to print a few pages of already finished
layout from our layout program. I do not know how to use the
layout program. I do not blame Tim. We were told last school year
that we were getting new equipment for The Brand. That never
happened; our old equipment fizzled until it finally died. When I
agreed to be the editor for this year it was with the
understanding that new equipment was "being ordered." When I
became editor I created a new format that could be assembled
quickly (with the proper equipment) was easy to read and was
geared more toward being up-to-date and serving the HSU community
than looking like a "real" newspaper. By the time this semester
began The Brand was a hit with the students staff and faculty.
They read it send letters and announcements and suggest stories.
I now have four more staff writers than in the early fall issues.
When we were able to keep the size down to four pages using the
incompatible printer was not as bad. We can no longer stay that
small without turning down stories or trimming them far too much
which means we now have to spend several hours printing something
that is already finished. The increased involvement should be good
news and it would be if we had a printer. You might ask "Why come
this far and quit now?" That is what I am asking about my master's
degree. I am supposed to finish it in May but I have let The
Brand keep me from doing the work I came here to do.
Review of Michael Frayn's Noises Off
by Richard Ruane
Micheal Frayn's Noises Off is one of the funniest shows I have
ever seen produced at Van Ellis Theatre. As I am sure you have
heard it is a play within a play or a farce within a farce. It is
about the production of the farce Nothing On and takes us from the
show's dress rehearsal to backstage one month later and finally to
see what the show looks like after three months. All the actors
