HSU selects new university president

In a press conference Feb. 22. the
Presidential Search Committee headed by
Seymour trustee Gene Adams announced its
recommendation for the next University
President. Dr. Edwin L. (Lanny) Hall
president of Wayland Baptist University
was chosen to fill this position. Hall

in education and politics. He will be the
first layman to serve as president since
the late Dr. Rupert Richardson. Adams
said "I think we have selected the finest
young man available for this task." Hall
said "We have outstanding facilities an
impressive and qualified faculty and it's
evidenced to me that Hardin-Simmons university under Dr. Fletcher's
leadership a demonstrated that this institution values quality
teaching." Hall also said that he is impressed with the fact that
the Abilene area is so supportive of Christian higher education.
"We have an obligation to continue to deliver quality education
that is distinctively Christian" he added. The two areas which
Hall will be focusing on are marketing and the continuing
development of resources for the future. "We have a great
challenge before us but I think this institution is equal to it"
Hall said. Fletcher said "I could not be more delighted I wish
when I took this post I had this kind of experience this kind of
energy this kind of youth... It is an answer to prayer." Hall
said "We (my wife and I) look forward to the years ahead. With a
century of service behind this great university we look forward to
working hand-in-hand with the faculty staff students former
students trustees and other boards and supporting groups to
continue the tradition of excellence for which Hardin-Simmons
University is known." Hall and his wife Carol attended HSU.
They have two children Lana Carol 14 and Chad Lanier 10.
HSU's future discussed at luncheon

University Relations organized a Centennial Luncheon held on
Feb. 19 at the Abilene Civic Center to honor the 100th anniversary
of the signing of HSU's charter. Though the event included the
expected reminiscing it also focused on the years ahead for HSU.
Robert Hitt chairman of the HSU Board of Trustees gave Dr. Jesse
Fletcher a Texas flag that had been flown over the state capital.
Hitt presented the flag for Representative Bob Hunter who was
unable to attend because the house is now in session. Hitt also
presented a Senate Concurrent Resolution from the 72nd Legislature
