choose those who have proved their
ability to da tho beBt In lino with that
needed for- each particular place who
have put the most effort thought and-
time upon It and havorshown their
dependability. There are naturally
some exceptions however. Somo of
the shifts wero made at the request
cf tho students- themselves on account
of other pressing affairs and their
college work and lack of tlmo for
this strenuous outside work. Their
efforts have been appreciated and the
Brand regrets tho loss of such splin-
dld workors; and will bo glad of their
assistance whonovor they may offer It
We feel that the present Staff will ac-
complish wonders In making tho Brand
such an essential feature of collogo lite
that It will continue and progress
through tho years to come; making it
in truth The Simmons Brand to pre-
sent tho real Simmons to the world.

and attending difficulties also on ac-
count of shifting of the Staff in thjs
issue.
Another term of your life
In Sim-
mons has been written Irretrleveably
In the history of .your past. Has it
been what you wanted it to be? You
have yourself tp thank. Has it failed
to be what you. Wished? Again you
are responsible. But wo would say
don't grieve over tho "has been" pr
rest upon the past for a. new year la
herq to make or mar but take your
courage In your hand and cheerfully'
thankfully turn oyer that "new loaf.''
Although wo do not entirely agree with
the man "who said ''The past Is dead
forget it the future does not .exist
don't worry; today Is here-r-use it. '
Still one of the great beauties of tho
new year is that .chance to begin
afresh with renewed energy and de-
termination '
We. live la deeds not years;
In thoughts not breaths
In feelings not in figures on a dial. .
We should cdunttlmo by heart throbs.
He most lives who. thinks most' feels
the noblest acts the best.
--PHILIP- J. BAILEY
The Staff of Department Editors and
reporters as announced in this issue
of tho Brand is the permanent Staff
for the 1917 Brand to end with tho
close of the Spring term.
When tho 'newspaper was Initiated
into Simmons in the Fall of 1916 the
entire working organism of tho Brand
was necessarily put upon a trial basis
on account of the inexperience in this
line ' The response on the part of
the Student Body has been noble al-
most every one who was called upon
to take .a part either because of for-
mer records in press work in Simmons
or' special knowledge of the. work
put his heart and best efforts into
making the Brand a success. A chance
was given to every student who was
especially Interested In this work to
gain a "place on the Staff. Many tal-
ented ones were discovered and the
results were indeed inspiring. Per-
haps yes surely'' there Is yet undis-
covered genius atriongrus hut we can
ju'dge amd ohbeee' only from thosevwho
have aeeompUebed and not 'from those
who give' promise of acoosaplishment
However the Brand remains always
open tp worthy and useful eoatrlp-

The Bpirit of tho person who has of-
fered tho prizes for Simmons songsi-is
nobly unselfish; and is proof of the
always glad Interest in" their Alma
Mater which theAlumni of Slmnibnn
have. We. know that there are those
among; our student body who; -though
endowed withgroat ability 'have been
too sparing with it and harjdly free in
expression. Now here is the most
splendid' and generous opportunity
over offered for tho 'free expression In
song of our inmost thoughts and feel-
ings. Th'is whole-hearted method of
encouragement is not only of highest
personal benefit to the one who
strives for the honor but.lt also brings
greater honor and esteem to our dear
college. So let us take advantage of
this offer arouso interest and bring
forth productions or which Simmons
may well bo proud m ' A. M
.
There Is a saying floating around
'somewhere that experience however
costly is worth the price. If this is
true then "the Brand Staff is getting
no bargain.
Perhaps you think we are getting
something out of It yre are but what
wo get" out of It is a very Intangible
something which comes from what we
put into it. This experience togeth-
er with the personal benefit obtained
is tho only reward of a Staff member
excopt the' satisfaction "which enn come
only from real services. s
'- .
Simmons Is entering anew era.
Pervading every classroom and every
department of tho college life there'-iB
evident a new zeal and determination
that Simmons' shall come In to her
own both in point of unquestionable
scholarship and in the reach of her
influence in blessing the lives pt the
young men and wom'en of .this section
of Texas and of' the .world. flail to
the optimistic future of tho present
term and of every term that shall be
within the nex thousand years with
a shout.of earnest Joy and abiding con-
fidence that as the days and the years
come and go as student after student
passes through the halls p Old Sim
mons and goes out' into the world to
live out the Ideals for which our
Alma Mater stands'; tho note of victory.
shall continue to be heard and grow-
ing louder and louder shall reach the
ears pt every .man and woman in the
wide world; then there shall be Buch
a hearty resppnse to the nedds and
possibilities of Simmons College that
her name shall no longer be "college"
but "Simmons University." J. W. H.DOMESTIC SCIENCE GIRLS
