The first
thing any job
hunter is going to
need is a good
resume. Hundreds
upon hundreds of
books and other
resources have
been published on
the topic of
resumes all
designed to help
you create the
"perfect resume."
The following is a condensed version ol a
lot of the information out there. There are sev-
eral resources available in the Career Services
office as well as online that can help you with
your resume. Please consult these if you have
specific questions about building your resume.
They can be valuable tools lor you.
First let's look at the purpose of a resume.
Resumes are supposed to develop a good first
impression. Think of your resume as a sales
brochure a marketing tool or a 30-second com-
mercial advertising a specific product. That
product is YOU! Most employers take 10 to 30
seconds to look over a resume to decide it they
will interview you. You want your resume to
grab their attention not turn them away because
you have typos or misspellings.
Resumes are NOT:
An autobiography telling your whole
life story on a piece of paper.
A chronological listing of all the dates
and places you worked.
A place to exaggerate about your experi-
ence and qualifications.
Resumes can have many parts. Some of
the most common are the heading a summary'
or objective statement education work experi-
ence honorsaw ardsscliolarslups relevant
coursework skills activitiescommunity
involvement and references. Not all of these
sections have to be included in your resume.
Make your decision on what to include based
upon your experience skills and the needs ol
the employer. When trying to decide what to
include always ask yoursell what you want the
employer to know about you. Not all ol these
sections might be relevant to the job lor which
you are applying or to your experience.
Some basic guidelines are as follows:
Keep it Short and Simple (KISS).
Try to limit your resume to one page.
Keep sentences brief.
Give examples - pour on the sizzle
(remember your trying to sell yourself)!
Be positive and enthusiastic.
Do not exaggerate.
Do not mention salary or wages
Use good quality H.5" by 1 1" paper. Soli
colors such as white ivory beige or gray are
recommended.
Keep a one-inch margin on all lour sides
ol the page.
Use louts that are easy to lead (such as
'I lines New Roman and Anal) and are between
10 and 12 point in sie.
Avoid cutesy aitwork or photos.
Double space between sections
Single space within sections.
Hold. Underline or CAPIIALIE sec-
don headings so they stand out.
Use bullets () or asterisks () to list
instead ol writing paragraphs.
Proolread three (lines lor spelling enors
or typos. Also have at least two oilier people
proolread your resume. DO NO I depend on
spell check to catch your mistakes.
Never include age. gendei. marital sialus.
height and weight race or religion salary
requirements reasons lor leav ing prev mils jobs
or personal statements.
Share your group or organization's events with the HPU
community! Deadline for submitting news items is 5 p.m.
Tuesday prior to each Friday publication. Send your
notices via email to:
yellowjackethputx.edu or drop them by room 104 in the
