Dr. Taylor also had a column in
the Link and in this issue his column
carried the title "IIPC Discovers Itself
in a I'ransilion Period." lay lor noted
that the college was undergoing tran-
sition in two ways: first in physical
plant and second in regaid to the size
of enrollment. "In the days of 'more
and more on less and less' the old
barn the air castle and dear old Todd
Hall provided homes for less than a
dollar a month to many wonderful
young men. 1 hat day has passed To
meet the competition ol modern edu-
cation. new buildings must be built.
... As the horse and buggy have
passed awav so with the shack col-
lege." In commenting on the second
change. Taylor observed. "Once our
college had an ambition to have Cwc
hundred students. I hat would make a
good college under the old classical
curriculum the classics have pretty
well passed away . . Our day
demands a wide lange of courses in
the curriculum especially of the
upper level and giadu.ue courses. If
we ilo not oiler a wide range of cours-
es our college would sink again to a
junior college And to oiler such
courses we need a larger student body.
'I he college will still be a small col-
lege but a much larger small college."
A story on page ft reported
Newman's first chapel appearance on
May ft. Newman told the students
that the upcoming academic year was
planned to be "great." He promised
students "that his administration
would do 'everything we can to make
you happy and to make you feel that
you are a part of this college.'" In
return. Newman asked the student
body lor cooperation discipline and
high morale. Promising "the finest
faculty' in the school's ftft year his
tory by fall Newman also promised
that Minis Auditorium . . . will be
completely renovated by fall." Also a
new student center and an SO piece
marching band were predicted.
In another story it was reported
that Dr. O. E. Winebrenner professor
of science was retiring alter 43 years
of service to IIPC. The 7ft-y ear-old
professor joined the faculty in 191.1.
Having taught every science course in
the curriculum Winebrenner had also
taught a number of other college
courses. At a special chapel May 1 1 .
Winebrenner was presented a gold
pen and pencil set. He spoke briefly
at the close of the program.
The IIPC track and field team
won Cap Shelton's 14th Texas
Conference championship at
McMurry in Abilene on May 13. 1 he-

first major change in the school's ath-
letic policy since the sport was
dropped is part of the new emphasis
on Howard Payne athletics." A club
team had been playing during the
spring ol 1955 and held their practices
at Coggin Park while playing their
games at Sportsman Park. IIPC had
not fielded a baseball team since the
I92S season one of the most unsuc-
cessful seasons on record with a 1-7
conference record. 'I he article noted
that most of the losses were by mar-
gins of one or two runs and the season
finale against conference champ
Southwestern was hard fought with
the Yellow Jackets losing 11-9.
