BUSINESS : MARFA PUBLIC LIBRARY
OWNER (S): CITY OF MARFA
Mr. Helen Forbes, head librarian, has held the position
since August 1958 and will retire April 30, 1974. Ms. Forbes
has lived in Marfa since January 1943. She worked 15i years
at the Big Bend Sentinel before quitting and going to work at
the Library. Ms. Forbes is a native of Missouri but came to
Texas from Arkansas shortly after graduating from high school.
EMPLOYEES: In addition to Ms. Forbes, Mrs. Evelyn Davis -
apristant librarian since August 1972 and will retire December
15, 1973. She retired from a school teaching job in Marfa in
the spring of 1972. Miss Mary Silva will replace Mrs. Davis
on December 3, 1973. Mary graduated from Marfa High School
in the spring of 1973.
YEAR BUCTNES BEGAN: The library was first started in 1947
EARLIER HISTORY: The Library was started by the Marfa Lions
Club, who were assisted by the Marfa Study Club. Mr. E. K.
Beanland was president of the Lions Club at that time and
Mrs. Beanland was president of the Study Club. The library
was located in the former USO building and now the Beta Sigma
Phi building which is owned by the City of Marfa. After
eight months the Lions Club turned the library over to the
City of Marfa and the City has operated it since. Mrs. Mackie
Adams was the librarian for 15 years and as soon as the City
took over it was moved to the City building on the corner of
Highland avenue across from the courthouse.
After Mrs. Adams retired Ms. Helen Forbes became City
Librarian. When the Elite Laundry was closed Mr. and Mrs.
Bishop Bailey bought the building and in the spring of 1973
they gave the building to the City of Marfa to be used always
as a library. It was completely rebuilt and the library was
moved into the new location in June of 1973.
The library board with Mrs. Bishop Bailey as chairman,
appointed by the City Commissioners, was organized in 1966.
Mrs. Rube Evans and Mrs. J. Alfred Roosevelt were the other
board members. Later Mr. R. W. Thornsburg and the Rev. W. W.
Hutchinson and Mrs. Frank Gervasi were appointed to the board,
and Mrs. Roosevelt resigned and assumed a district office withthe State Library Association. Upon Rev. Hutchinson's resig-
nation, the Rev. Carl Crouch was appointed to take his place.
