John Ucsbett Talks About the
Movement or Beef Cattle
An Old Timer Predicts that Beef Cittle Will
Brlns 30 In Texas In Two Years
General Livestock News
Gen John Nesbett general livestock
scent of the Chicago and Alton railroad
that lino which has ever proven itself a
friend to the cattlemen ot the Southwest
was at the Ellis hotel yesterday having
just returned from a trip up the Fort
Worth and Denver road To a Gazette
reporter who engaged him In conversa-
tion Gen Keflbett stated that there was
a visible slacking up in the cattle ship-
ments which is but a natural result of
tho presidents order extending the time
for the Indian Territory cattlemen to got
out with their herds
This will be a Roodthing too for the
cattle market be said andlexpeot
to 6eo prices stronger from now on than
they have been for some time The ex-
tension will ODerate so as to distribute
over a period of eight weeks shipments
which would have been made In four
weeks and less Under the original
order which required all cattle to
be out of the inhabited Indian
country from October 1 there would have
been a terrible rush of cattle from that
section during this month and there
could have been but one result a glutted
market and ruinous low prices This ex-
tension will give the cattlemen more time
to move their herds and the market will
be roliovca from a pressure that would
have ruined it
To illustrate A few days before the
order extending the time was made pub-
lic I was in Kansas City and was in con-
versation with a prominent Strip cattle-
man He stated to me that he had sent
out orders that would cause 25000 bead
of cattle to be rounded up and shipped at
once These cattle would have struck
Chicago on a Monday and what would
have been the consequenoe any cat-
tleman can tell you The order
of extension came in the meantime and
the order for the movement of that vast
number of cattle was countermanded
and only about 7000 wont to marketthus
relieving It of a surplus that would
have sent prices dowu to nothing
I think that the slacking up of Terri-
tory shipments however will operate to
increase the shipments from Texas for
it was generally conceded that if the
Territory order as it originally stood
was enforced Texas cattlemen would
hold buck their stook but now since the
Territory shipments will not be crowded
in the month of September but will be
distributed over a threemonth period I
look for a livelier movement from this
state I dont know that this will be
best but rather incline to the idea that
if Texas cattlemen would still hold bauk
that it would be better for tbein in the
long run
rnxnicTs better times
Beef Cattle will Sell in Texas at S30 Per
lleail in Less Than Two Tears
Mr John DenniB of Hood county one
of the old time cattlemen of this section
of the state was in the city yesterday
and in a conversation with several cattle-
men predicted that inside of a year and
a half beef steers weighing 10o0 pounds
would sell in the Fort Worth market at
S30 per head
Tho fact of tho matter is said Mr
Dennis cattle are goiug to be scarcer
People have been gottinz rid of them as
fast as thoy could do so and I am satis
lied that the cattle of the future aro going
to be of a better class in this state but
there will not be so many of them Gen-
eral conditions will also improve and 1
see nothing to preveut an improvement
of values right here at home The start-
ing up of the refrigerator at Fort Worth
would help this along rapidly and I un-
derstand that it will be started up in a
short time
It will be much better for
cattlemen of Texas to sell
their cattle hero if they can
at a less price than they can get for
them at Chicago they can do this and
still come out ahead Xow it is known
that it costs about SO to ship a
beef steer to Chicago and the animal
will lose 100 pounds weight in transit
The loss in shrinkage will foot up 3 and
the freight will amount to 6 which
makes 9 You can see by this that the
beef steer could be sold here at three
fourths of a cent per pound less than he
would bring in Chicago and still the
producer would be ahead I believo
that thinsrs will come our way alter
awhile aud I say this after yoars ot ex-
perience in the cattle business I be-
gan the Jbuslness in 1858 and have kept
it up ever since except three years that
I was engaged in trying to bust up this
government and 1 have noticed all
along here of late years that so many
people are gitting out of the business
that the supply of cattle in Texas la
getting smaller all the time
A CATTLE TAanNE
The Cutting Down ot Stock on the Eanges
Will Urine It About
A great many people are of the opinion
this country is on the brink of a great
beet famine They cite as reason for
this belief that stocks on the ranges have
been greatly cut down lu the last few
years and that many of the farming dis-
tricts of the country which once raised
cattle in large numbers have almost
given up that branch of the livestock
business These opinions seem to be
pretty well taken and are substantiated
by a good deal of corroborative evidence
However we are hardly inclined to
think that the probable scarcity of cattle
in the next year or two will be so marked
as to caus in reality a famine The
opinion that cattle supplies were running
down rapidly has been prevalent for
quite a long time and It must not be
forgotten that in the face of all this sup-
plies In the Western markets are growing
heavier from season to season Of course
there has recently been for this a special
reason quite frequently alluded to in
these columns namely the widespread
prevalence of drouth In many leading
cattlegrowing sections Had not this
occurred it is probable that the heavy
runs at Chicago for u month past would
nut have been known Nevertheless we
see no reason why they sh mid not have
been fairly liberal Probabilities now
point to lessened runs df cattle in the
near future as compared with those of
the last two or three months However
the supplies will likely be something
near if not altogether tjual to the de-
mand We have great faith In the fu-
ture of cattlo prices butdo not expect to
see them stimulated by any such wonder-
ful development as a cattle famine would
produce A good demand improved
prices and everything necessary to make
a substantial and satisfactory business
seem to be ahead of cattlemen But It
Is just as well not to expeot to havo all
these things stimulated by oxtraordinary
conditions National Stookman
What ot the Winter
It is very fortunate that good rains
have visited the range country and
started the grass to growing at this sea-
son of the year said an old range man
to a Gazette reporter yesterday for I
look for a harder winter than we havo
bad for several years and the cattle will
ne d all the flesh they can get on them
to get through until spring In shape I
dontrjredict any terrible times on the
range for the cattle will be in good fix
to tackle the weather and I think win-
ter grazing will bo good but 1 do ex-
pect to experience more cold weather in
Texas during the coming winter than we
have had for quite a while We have
had two remarkable mild winters In suc-
cession and it can hardly be expected
that we will have the third one I look
for the cold weather to set inbefore
Christmas
Hold the Cattle
Two lessons are to be learned from the
present condition of the cattle markets
One is that the country is being largely
cleared of beef cattle The real drouth
and the drouth scare are causing an un-
precedented crowding to market The
result must be a scarcity at an early
day and nil who can find feed enough
at reasonable cost to keep their animals
from falling away in llesh should hold
them back for the present Second it
is the wrong time to go out of raising
cattle There will be enough driven from
tho business from sheer necessity to-
gether with those who will quit beoause
it has notpaid recently toleave n protlt

Mr A J Vick of Houston one of the
most extensive feeders of cattle iu the
South was In the city yestorday looking
over the cattle situation He feeds an-
nually at Houston Little Rock and
Memphis thousands of cattle using
principally cotton seed in preparing his
beeves for the market This season be
expects to feed anywhere from 10000 to
20000 head and will draw his supplies
from Texas The determination of Mr
Vick to feed the number of cattle he in-
tends to is good ovidence of his opinion
