BARRUNDIAS DEATH
Version of President Barrlllas ot Guatemala
of the Tragedy on tho Acapnlco
City op Mexico Sept 10 In answer
to an associated press telegram sent
September C President Barrillas of Gua-
temala replies today that Cunningham
came to Guatemala as the representative
of the New York associated press I
gave blm all the information I could
but I did not authorize him to arrange
or fix the American or other press as
this is not the praotioe of Guate-
mala nor did I ask him to
sot right the Barrundia affair
I transcribe you the telegraphic report
of the port captain of San Jose De Gua
tnmala about tbe capture of Barrundia
referring to what happened aboard tbe
Acapulco which is the same as sent be-
fore and is the truth and is corrobo-
rated by investigations made by
certified documents which 1 shall
send you by the next mail
In the investigation comes the declara
tion of Capt Pitts which completely
justifies the Guatemalan authorities
Mlzener United States minister was
consultod as nn not of courtesy only
When Port Capt Torrlollo and Capt
Pitts read to Barrundia the order for
his delivery to tho Guatemalan
authorities Barrundia asked permis-
sion to change his olothes which was
granted but on turning to change he
grasped two revolvers and fired on Tori
Gilo Pitts and a policeman and the lat-
ter tired on Barrundia killing him
Capt Pitts had taken precaution in or-
dering the passengers to withdraw on
deck or else some would undoubtedly
have been killed by tho bullets from
Barrundlas pistols

KILGORE TALKS
The Political Outlook as It Appears to the
Member from the Third District
ot Texas
Correspondence of the Gazette
Washington Sept 7 The Sunday
Gazette today has the following inter-
view with Col Kllgore
There is a general feeling all over
the country srld Col C B Kilgore
the Texas watchdog of the treasury to
tbe Sunday Gazette yesterday that
the next house will be Democratlo by a
large majority and there are good rea-
sons why such should be the oase You
know I have just returned from my dis-
trict and while traveling on the cars I
beard much political talk that was in-
teresting Tbe Republicans in tbe South
are generally opposed to tho force bill
They regard that measure as inimical
not only to their own interests but the
business interests of tbe country and
everywhere they are outspoken in their
opposition
1 heard a Western Republican say
the other day tfiat the foroe bill was in-
troduced just for effect that it never
would become a law This Western Re-
publican said tbe only salvation of the
G O P was in keeping the South solid
and as tbe Alliance was tbe opening
wedge for a political division In the
Soutb it wa3 time that something be
done to effect that movement in that
section hence tho force bill It would
net surprise me continued Col Kll
gore if that theory should turn out it
bo correct
In my canvass I found the people
fully alive to the Importance of tbe tariff
question In fact I found that to be the
chief Issue In every congressional dis
trict throughout the country tbe Repub-
licans are put on tbe defensive on all tbe
leading questions They have in every
instance gone back on their platform
Instead of reducing taxation tbey have
increased it and when charged with It
on the stump they answer that tbey have
increased tbe number of articles on the
free list and have given the poor farmer
free sugar But the farmer is no fool
as tbe Republicans are fast learningaud
it seems tbat the first winds of the com-
ing hurricane have penetrated the rock-
bound Republican fort of Vormont
It may be well enough to say that
this is an off year Yes it is an off
year I may say three off years all rolled
into one and it would not surprise mo if
it should also be an off year in Maine
Tbe faot is the grand old party of moral
ideas is suffering from a bad case of sali-
vation and despite the horoio efforts of
the biggest man in tho party James G
Blaine It will be impossible to arrest the
progress of the disease notwithstanding
he has attempted to amputate the dis-
eased member with bis reciprocity saw
I bear Republicans say that if the
country goes Democratic tbls fall and it
looks that wBy to them now it will re-
move Mr Harrison out ot the list of can-
didates for 92 Tbey say in private
more strongly than openly that every
appointment Harrison has made has
been with one purpose in view a moat
selfish purpose and tbat is to secure the
delegations for tbe national convention
of 92 Ho has not made a single ap-
pointment they say that has received
tbe unanimous indorsement of tbo party
They also say that he has brought about
more national scandals by his pussllani
mous administration than tbe party can
successfully shoulder tbls fall and that
he will bo to blame for any loss the party
may sustain in tbe congressional elec-
tion I know it is natural tbat kickers
should criticise their partys administra-
tion but I never knew any president to
be so generally abused and perhaps the
abuse is well deserved as Harrison
And tho most amusing part of it is that
the presidents friends find it extremely
difficult to make any eort of decent de-
fense
Yes but I heard lots of talk about
Mr Cleveland in Texas but it is too
early to speoulate about presidential
candidates With few exceptions tbe
Democrats in Texas are of tbe opinion
tbat if we can elect Mr Cleveland in
1892 we can elect any Demoorat There
is a clique comoosed of spoilsmen and a
number of conscientious Democrats who
are opposed to Mr Cleveland They
are now actively engaged In an attempt
to bring to the front tho silver question
as the leading issue In 1892 Tbey say
tbat if sliver can bo made the leading
issue it will effectually eliminate Mr
Cleveland from the field of candidates
in my opinion such an attempt it buo
cessfulwould be disastrous to the party
The campaign ot 1892 must be fought
out on economio grounds we must not
lose sight of tbo tariff and of course tbe
silver question will also be a prominent
factor and from present Indications the
Republicans will have their hands full
two years hence

A Fort Worth citizen yesterday received from
New York a letter containing the circular and
prospectus of an enterprising green goods
dealer there The business appears to be run
in the oldfashioned regulation style and as
usual contains a bogus clipping from a news-
paper describing tho method of the manufac-
ture of the goods
Last night the city fire department met in
pursuance of the adjournment taken on the pre-
ceding Saturday night Another letter was
read from President Newton Lassiter asking
