mer and affects the qaulity of his
tillage It leally lowers the grade of
j farming If upon the other hand the
merchants ill join with us in urging
farmers to raise all their food sup-
plies and try to produce by better
tillage doube the crop per acre they
now jproduce the result as it affects
the merchant will be this
All business will soon be on a cash
basis and the volume will be three or
four times as large from the farmers
alone The advent of more money
will bring diversified industries among
the fanners and eventually will at-
tract manufactures to the market
t instead of calling meetings for the
purpose of raising funds to secure im-
migration call meetings to encourage
the farmers who know the country
and are loyal to it to universally
adopt th < following plan
First proide their own food sup-
plies from the farm
Second double the average product
on every acre under cultivation and
let each worker on the farm by the
use of better teams and tools till
three times as many acres as at pres-
ent not in the one crop but in a va-
riety of diversified and profitable
crops This would cause an Imme-
diate demand for more land and would
provide the money to pay for it This
makes every man on the farm more
than six times the Industrial power he
now is and gives him a love of the
farm This is better than to leave
him in discouragement and secure im
migrants to come and buy him out
I should not speak so positively
only I have observed for a quarter of
a century that where the southern
merchants have changed from an ad-
vance system to a cash system they
have prospered very much more than
In former years and the number of
failures is immensely less Of course
it is not meant that there should be
no credits but practically there
should be little necessity for them un-
til the crop is actually ready for the
harvest then trade becomes a cash
transaction Or better still the farm-
er can get his money from the bank
and pay cash in all cases if there is
a lack of ready money
The advance system bears down
upon the cotton farmer Tvith special
hardship His crop is either sold at
once or is forced to the gin and the
warehouse so as to secure loans If
the cotton farmer is not forced to sell
to raise money or pay debts he will
store his crop on his farm and mar-
ket at his leisure which is in the in-
terests of all parties
It appears to me therefore that the
farmer will immeasurably gain when
he produces what he lias hitherto
bought In the way of Irving He is
not compelled te sell his crop imme-
diately upon the harvest When he
loes sell he trades for cash The
greater amount of money he has Is
very helpful to the family but the
stimulus to his selfrespect is perhaps
the most important item to he consid-
ered The merchant prospers bv the
gi eater volume of business and bv the
quick return of his money It seems
to me that these points should he
urged upon all the people-

ARE PAINTING THE DEPOT
G N Passenger Station Is to Be
Brightened Up With Paint From
Top to Bottom
A force of I G N painters start-
ed to woik on the local passenger de
pot this morning and the big station
is to be brightened up from top to
bottom This will add to the appear-
ances of things quite a bit The Her-
ald would like to suggest another im-
provement the road could make to its
local piopeity and at the same time
help the appearances of the good old
town Just across the tracks fiom
the depot is a lot of considerable size
that at present is not being utilized
for any purpose and it has occurred
to us that the railroad could convert
this waste space into a pretty little
plaza withisteps leadingVup from the
and a fountainand nlce grass plots
between broad walks making a place
where people waiting for trains es-
pecially delayed trains could spend a
few minutes pleasantly and avoid be-
ing lequiied to sit in the depot The
plot spoken of is ideal for a little
paik place and we believe such a
place would he appreciated No
harm to suggest it anyway
SPOONERWALLOCK CO
Will Present Carmen at the New Tem-
ple Theatre Tonight
The SpoonerWallock Stock com-
pany who are here for a week will
appear at the Temple Theatre tonight
in the great Olga Nethersole version
of Carmen The following is what
the San Angelo Pi ess had to say con-
cerning it >
Were you at the opera house last
night If not you missed the show of
your life The famous Carmen whose
life is so inteiestingly depicted by
Prosper Mernmee was presented by
that company of artists the Spooner
Wallock Stock Co Mr Conklin an
old theatrical man happened to stroll
in and he though accustomed to the
tricks of the profession declared it to
he a wonderful perfoimance of an ex-
traordinary play The story relates
the varied experiences of one of the
most notorious women that evei lived
in Spain Her cunning and the in-
numerable artifices to accomplish the
success of her flirtations induced
many to regard her with all the sus-
picion due a witch The play pre-
sents the many faces of her character
in a bright and lifelike manner Miss
AHIe Spooner as Caimen was seen
at her best This joung actress has
accomplished what many others have
struggled for and often in vain after
many yeais The chameleon like na-
ture of Carmen renders a peifect im-
personation extremely difficult But
the part in Miss Spooneis hands
seemed easy and tiue to life She
gripped her audience with intense in-
terest fionj Hist to lust Ne er was a
finei portiajal given by any actress
in the Ballinger opera house Mi
Wallock is a leading man of no ordi-
nal tjpe Apart from his physical
advantages he infuses much Intelh
gence Into all his work and portrays
his impersonations with the touch of
an artists hand Mi Wallock has
made himself famous thioughout the
country as Dr Jekjll and Mr Hyde
To have seen him m that charactei
one night and then in the many
others on following nights demon-
strates the depth and breadth of this
actors art Ho stamps every char
acter he plays with its own individu
allty andhis interpertation of Don
Jose last night leaves nothing to be
desired I
Miss Huston playad Dolores in a
very sweet manner Her character
was a delightful contrast to the others
and she is entitled to praise for the
able interpretation of a hard role Mr
Spooner tnough gieat in comedy can
also play other loles which he ably
demonstrated last night Little Gar-
net King has never been seen heie be-
fore Shej appeared last night and
did veiy well indeed The other mem-
bers of the company acquitted them
selves with much ciedit especially
Mrs Spooner as Theresa the enemy
