DISTURBANCES CONTINUE
Lipari Islands Experience Another
Serious Shock

Naples Jan 4 Reports have just
reached here saying that additional
heavy earthquake shocks have been
felt in the Lipari Islands and that
Stromboili is in active eruption is-
suing forth lava No fatalities were
reported in the messages Official
reports say that little damage has
been done by the latest shocks but
the people are greatly terrified Scien-
tists who are investigating the dis
aster are disturbed by the continuous
disturbances and say that the un-
usual prolongation indicates another
violent upheaval is likely at any mo
ment
ARRIVED AT CAIRO
Five Hundred Officers of the Atlantic
Fleet Reach Cairo

officers of the Atlantic fleet arrived
here today from Suez and it is ex-
pected that the Sporry staff will come
later The stop here will be short
and it is understood the fleet will sep-
arate and carry relief to tht > various
earthquake cities of Italy and Sicily
The supply ship Culgoa has already
started for Messina with a cargo of
provisions

Cardinal Navi Says Both Messina and
Regglo Will Be Rebuilt

Rome Jan 4 Cardinal Navi who
has arrived here from Messina an-
nounces that both Messina and Reg
gio will be rebuilt He says that
while the destruction has not been
exaggerated the commeicial value of
the sites insures the rebuilding of the
cities He savs that many of the
smaller towns will be removed and
that the restoiing of the territory will
be the work of generations Premier
Giolitti supports the views of Navi
He denies that Messina and Reggio
are to be burned There are millions
in valuables in the ruins of the towns
and every effort will be made to save
them
Late messages say that eighty thou
sand bodies still remain in the trench-
es at Mesina They are being
thrown in the Messina straits and it
is feared this will cause contamina

dent Roosevelt today sent a special
message to congress recommending
the approval of sending the supply
ship Culgoa to Italy with three hun-
dred thousand dollars worth of sup-
plies and provisions and urging the
appropriation of a half million dollars
for additional relief The president
said the great need of the victims
the deht of civilization to Italy and
the warm friendship of this country
and the affection felt by the count-
less Italian American citizens prompt
us to immediate and effective relief
The house after hearing the mes-
sage immediately passed a bill voting
eight hundred thousand dollars for
relief work

resulted from the knife in the hands

examination of General Hains was
completed after he had testified he
told about Mrs Hains writing to An
nis that her husband had discovered
everything and warning him to avoid
Hains The general swore that he
considered Peter irrational Thornton
Hains testified in his own behalf and
made an excellent witness He was
only heard briefly however before re-
cess was taken He described how
Peter came to his house after his re-
turn and before he knew that he was
homfT from the Philippines He says
he acted like a crazy man and told
him all about his wifes confession
He says he took Peter to his father
at Fort Hancock and then pledged
himself to look after him
