Around Lasator will be more
fruit trees planted and truck farms
operated tho coming year than
other portions of the county In a
few years it will be a great fruit

Every other portion of tho county
is equally as good and will event-

II you want to keep the price of
cotton up let every farmer plant
only as much as the labor of his
farm can gather Dont put in a
crop which will requiro the hiring

RED AND CYPRESS RIVERS
Dcnlaon Herald The cost of clean
out the channel of Red River and put-
ting It in shopofor navigation at least
four to Bix months In the year will more
than bo made back to tho farmer of
North Texas and Indian Territory in
the saving of freights on outgoing farm
products in a singlo year That fact a
iono justifies the expenditure and that
is only ono of many good reasons why
the project should meet with favorable
consideration
Red River is said by sOmo jokers to
be a treacherous stream but probably
it is not more given to changing its bed
than are many other rivers All great
water courses have their little idlosyn
craciea just ns men and women have
theirs especially women Hut this
much is certain Way back in 181050
when Capt Sam Wright ran a steam-
boat regularly between Now Orleans
and the mouth of the Kiamitia there
was good navigation in what was known
ob Red Hirer Of course some say that
tho Red River of today is not tho Red
River of fifty or sixty years ago but
why not Perhaps it is not Certainly
tho water is not tho same but the pres
ent channel must be about where tho
old channel was It lins straightened
itself in numerous places and played
practical jokes with tho landscape every
fow mil js but it still Hows gulf
ward and laps tho shores of Texas on
one side a great part of tho way Its
channel could be easily freed from tho
obstructions that now hinder naviga
tion Red River has a churlish habit
of going where it is not welcome and
mixing with corrupters Bo havo other
rivers Today it is a placid stream al-
most brown in its transparency tomor
row a sullen roaring rebel red as an
ancient warriors battle ax and danger
oub disrespectful and downright ugly
Nevertheless Red River is a highly im-
portant stream and is deserving Gov-
ernment guardianship and support
Dallas News
For the information of the News
and others who may not under-
stand wby Red River of today is
not tho same as Red River was
prior to the seventies the Jimple
cute will say that tho full and
complete explanation consists in
this The Removal of the Raft
But for this masterly piece ofengi
neering the Red River of today
would be the same ob it was in
years past So would Cypress
Buyou The removal of the raft
was a practical illustration of kill-
ing two birds with ono stone it ef-
fectively did the work for the navi-
gation of two rivers Would tho
opening of a mill dam improve the
water in the pond Tho raft acted
as a dam and held the water back
the surplus water came out through
the lakes and all of it going out
gradually thus giving continous
nayigation or as long the water
lasted frequently tho supply last-
ed 10 to 12 months If there bad
been no railroads West of the Miss-
issippi the raft would still be in
Rod Rivor and would still be do-
ing business for the people The
condition of Red River twenty
years hence is a proposition for the
people to consider The Jimple
cute extends greetings to State
Press and trust the explanation
will prove satisfactory and thanks

mendatiou of the navigation ques-
tion in Red and Cypress river for a
