Four Thousand Orphans
Editor Timpiecute Unless you
were connected with the origin of
your venerable pdper and I would
not intimnto that you are so old as
that 1 have known it longer than
yourself possibiyjfor I havO known
it from its firpt number I know
Jefferson when in the infancy of
her glory as a great business cen
tor and wish that we may both
live to see hqragrealer city inhor
age thu n she was jn her vigbrouB
youth But this has nothing to do
withfour thousand orphans Itoll
you though what s true from the
origin of Buckner Orphans Homo
in 1879 some of the citizens o
Jefferson have been its friendsand
quite a number oft orphans from
that city nnd the country round-
about have been wards here and
some now are Some who were
from there and raised hero are now
elsowh c re and are intelligent citi-
zens and heads of lheirrespective
and respectable families Thanks
to everybody who has ever aided
in this great work < The way is
still open who will enter in I
dont me a n what orphans will yet
come but others are welcome and
there ie gooil room for more
I appeal to that greatsection of
Texas where they grow yellow
yams and ribbon cane great pines
and saw mills immense orohards
and vegitable farms rich ores and
lino cottonj great statesmen and1
business men good Samaritans
and noble Christian women to the
citizens of EaBt Texas for much
help These orphans are from all
parts of the country and from all
religious denominations and the
ranks of unbelievers alike The
latest official reports and all infor-
mation desired will he sent to all
enquiring frionds likewise thankB
and receipts for all contributions
But the preacher forgets his sub-
ject and wandered from his text
I forgot to toll you why I headed
this with Four Thousand Or-
phans It was because this in-
stitution has had the care of even
more than four thousand depend-
ents since it was first opened It
now has a family of 488 and good
comfortable well ventilloted un
crowded room formore ItB wardn
occup3 four large buildings 3 to 4
stories high and two of them solid
brick walls each 110 by 130 feel
and all are on separate grounds
The lowest average cost per day
for feeding the great family in the
several departments jb 86600 in
fact it is more than that now that
there are 488 against 450 some
months ago and this calculation is
made on the basis of 5cts per meal
for each
Now brother Jimplecute I
closo with my congratulations for
the seasonand requesting that you
give my love to Jefferson and all

It is a curious fact that the word hands
should live in our language as a practical
definition of the value and standing of the
laboring classes Mill liands farm hands
factory bands they are all alike simply
handS Eveti the worker themselves re-
cognize this definition as accurate by rarely
looking beyond thfcactivityof the liands

But some daythe worker learns thai behind
the hands is the stomach When the stom-
