Tho following is an extract from tho
report of tho grand jury at New Uoston
Bowie county September tnrm
Of tho sixtyfour bills returned by us
thirtyBeven are from Toxarkann
Tho criminal record of this county
seems to be duo to tho saloon and its
influence
Wo highly appreciate tho tenor of
Your Donors charge and tbo encour-
agement that must emanato from such
exhortations to attain tho highest pos
sibilities of a moral life and noble
stalwart manhood
Wo hope that you will continuo to
urge the people to a higher development
of their resources
If we hope to decrease tho criminal
record of this county we must ceaso to
license the saloon tho moBt prolific
means of encouraging crime

Two Cures Tor Intemperance
To thoso who look for results rather
than tho murine of theories it is mani-
fest that there are two great reforms
that would do more to lessen tho evils
of the liquor traffic than a million plat-
form pronuncianientos These are
first tho abolition of tho treating
habit which 5b carried to such absurd
extremes in this country and second-
ly the providingof some attractive sub-
stitute for the saloon Enough haB
been said and written against the
treating hjibit andit is not necessary
to go into details on the subject There
is no doubt v that it is the leading cause
that carries many young men over the
line of moderation to excess Some
years ago an effort half serious and
half jocular was made an antitreating
bill through the Colorado Legislature
This is obviously a thing that cannot
well be controlled by legislation But
it would easily be possible to get up a
movement that would make treating
unfashionable bad form as our En-
glish cousins would say
As to the other suggestion in regard
to providing some attractive substitute
for the saloon it is obviously a vital
one Some years ago a movement was
started in England by people who saw
the need of something of this kind
They established coffee houses where
for a reasonable price nonalcoholic re
freshments might be obtained also
reading matter and games It is an un
doubted fact that a majority of those
who resort to saloons go there for the
sakeof the Hcht warmth and tho com-
panionship rather than for tho liquor
In Los Angeles there was started
several months ago an establishment
of the kind referred to and it proved
so successful that a second houso has
been added Los Angeles Times
Kidney trouble preys upon tho mind dis-
courages and lessens ambition beauty vigor
and cheerfulness soon
disappear when the kid-
neys are out of order
or diseased
Kidney troublo has
become so prevalent
that it Is not uncommon
for a child to bo born
afflicted with weak kid-
neys if tho child urin-
ates too often if tho
urine scalds the flesh or if when the child
reaches an age when It should be able to
control tho passage It is yet afflicted with
bedwetting depend upon It the cause of
the difficulty is kidney trouble and tho first
step should be towards tho treatment of
these Important organs This unpleasant
trouble ts due to a diseased condition of the
kidneys and bladder and not to a habit as
m6st people suppose
Women as well as men aro made mis-
erable with kidney and bladder trouble
and both need the samo great remedy
