On one occasion, he said, too much publicity had nearly
cost them a very heavy loss, so it was a hard and fast
rule to avoid publicity of all kinds. He explained that
this precaution was necessary due to the fact that his
Company always wired him advance information on the
stock market in code.
He replaced it in the bill book, took out the code
key and said: "You will please excuse me, gentlemen,
as I must now decipher the message which I have just
received."
Whereupon he sat down at his desk and proceeded
to work out the hieroglyphics.
He appeared very deep in study. His face flushed
at times and the perspiration rolled from his forehead;
apparently he was under a severe mental strain. After
he finished the message, he arose.
"Gentlemen, if you will please pardon me, I must
go over to the Stock Exchange. My Company has outlined
a lot of work, and I shall be a very busy man today."
As he was preparing to leave the room, Spencer
said: "Mr. Stetson, if you have no objection, I would
like to see that newspaper clipping you were reading a
few moments ago."
"Certainly," said Stetson, handing him the pocketbook.
"There are other papers there also that might
interest you if you care to see them." Stetson then
left the room.
Spencer proceeded to examine the contents of the
bill fold, taking out the clipping which merely commented
upon the price which a New York broker paid
for a seat in the Stock Exchange. After having read
the clipping Spencer handed it to me to read. He next
took out Stetson's contract with his Company, then
Stetson's $100,000.00 bond with McLean
