NORFLEET
stated that I appeared to be everything he required in
this connection, even to being a brother lodge member.
He then asked my consent for him to use my name in
buying and selling stock. He could not use his own on
account of his connection with the Company, without
endangering his bondsmen.
However, if I would allow him to use my name he
would make it very profitable for both of us. He explained
that he had never before, with but one exception,
taken advantage of this opportunity to make money, and
that was when he had taken $200,000.00 from the Exchange
for a certain Chief Justice Hughes, of the
Supreme Court in New York, but that his desire to do
so at this time was due to the fact that there was a
$100,000.00 mortgage on his three hundred thousand
dollar home, which would fall due in a short time, and
that he was more than anxious to make enough on the
side to take care of this debt.
He stated he was confident that I was an honest,
straight-forward man in whom he could place confidence
and trust, and asked if I would be willing to go into the
proposition.
I told him I would be willing, provided it was
perfectly legitimate.
He assured me it was strictly business and being
done every day. He then asked me what kind of man
Spencer was and if I would vouch for him, stating that
as he was a friend of mine, we might also take him into
the deal.
I told Stetson I knew nothing whatever about
Spencer, that he had known him as long as I and that
I would not vouch for him.
Spencer appeared to be an honest, hard working
young business man, he said, and he thought we would
be safe in inviting him to join us in the speculations,
and he would use his name in connection with mine, providing
I would consent.
