NORFLEET
close up the purchase of 2,000 acres in Williamson
County, Texas, but owing to a recent oil boom the
owners have about decided not to dispose of their land,
and it is just possible he might be interested in your
place instead."
At this auspicious moment his "friend" walked into
the lobby of the hotel and was introduced to me as
"WV. B. Spencer."
Spencer looked to be about 34 years of age, was
well dressed in a conservative business suit and had a
pleasing personality.
He did not seem especially interested in my property
at first, but led me to believe he might be if the
Williamson County trade failed to go through.
Next morning Hamlin returned to the hotel and
told me Spencer had had a wire from the owners of the
Williamson County land refusing to sell. Then Spencer
drifted in and Hamlin called him over.
Spencer now seemed greatly interested in my stock
farm and asked me for a detailed description. This he
briefly wrote on a telegraph blank, stating he would submit
my proposition to Mr. Garrett Thompson, the secretary
of the company at MIinneapolis.
I was led to believe the telegram was sent forward.
Spencer then said that he and a friend had engaged
a double room at the Jefferson Hotel together but his
friend had been called arway, so he invited me to share
the room with him. This would give him a chance to
show me his credentials and also enable him to get
better acquainted with me.
He especially wanted me to see his contract with
the company and his annual report, of which he seemed
very proud, almost like a schoolboy who has received
unusually good "marks" from his teacher.
I accepted his invitation and checked out of the St.
George Hotel.
In due time he received a telegram in reply to the
one which he supposedly sent to Mr. Garrett Thompson.
