Admission Requirements
Before being admitted to this program, a student must
satisfy the requirements listed under "Initial Academic
Programs," p. 15.
General Education Requirements
General Education requirements (University Core and
Degree Core requirements) for the BS are listed on p. 20.
All JMC majors are required to take HIST 221-222 or
117-118.
General Departmental Requirement
Majors in Journalism and Mass Communication are
required to make a grade of C or better in all courses in the
department that count toward their degrees and to achieve
an overall GPA of 2.50 for 129 semester hours, including
65 hours of liberal arts and sciences.
Requirements for the BS in Journalism and
Mass Communication
Courses basic to all sequences are designed to provide
fundamental information about the mass media, writing
skills, theoretic analyses of mass communication, ethics,
and communication law and regulations.
Degree plans in each sequence include both academic and
practical experience. The university's twice-weekly paper,
the Optimist; its yearbook, the Prickly Pear; its video
yearbook, Visions; the campus radio stations, KACU-FM
and KLGP; KUF-TV7; and ACU Video are all staffed by
mass communication students. Students also have the
opportunity to work in internships at the Abilene
Reporter-News, local radio and television stations, local
advertising agencies, or public relations departments.
Summer internships have been done by recent graduates in
Washington, D.C., Nashville, Oklahoma City, Dallas, Fort
Worth, Amarillo, Abilene, Shreveport, St. Louis, Austin,
Atlanta, New York, and Los Angeles.
Students who wish to study Journalism and Mass
Communication must have an ACT English score of 24 or
pass with a score of 70 on a standardized Grammar,Punctuation, and Spelling Test (GPS), and demonstrate
acceptable keyboarding skills. Students who make below70 on the GPS must take JMC 101, which increases the
hours required for graduation to 132. Before enrolling in
any course numbered 200 or above in the division (except
JMC 233), a student must make a satisfactory score on a
typing examination. "Satisfactory" is defined as typing at
least 35 words per minute (wpm) with 90 percent accuracy
Consult the department chairman or division directors for
help in scheduling and degree planning.
All majors are strongly encouraged to be active members of
at least one chapter of the department's nationally affiliated
professional societies or associations.
A freshman's schedule is affected by many factors: high
school grades, ACT score, other diagnostic tests, advanced
placement, major field choice, work schedule, etc. A
typical, declared major in Journalism and Mass
Communication, with the help of his or her adviser, will
plan a schedule based upon the department's suggested
schedules (see Adviser for the department's suggestions).
Requirements for the available majors are listed below.
Students in each area should remember also to take the
additional course required on the basis of the GPS Test.
