Journalism and Mass Communication 95
JMC 418 Theory of Mass Communication (3-0-3), fall. An
investigation of the current theories and principles of mass media and
mass media ethics. Prerequisite: Junior standing.
JMC 420 Basic Mass Communication Research (3-0-3), fall. A
study of principles and methods of research utilized in mass
communication. Emphasis is given to probability, sampling, survey
instrument construction, data interpretation, advertising and broadcast
research methods, and use of secondary data.
JMC 488 Communication Law (3-0-3), spring. Freedom and
responsibility of print and broadcast media ethically and legally. First
Amendment principles and legal philosophy affecting the media and
employees. Prerequisite: junior standing.

JMC 101 Grammar for Journalists (3-0-3), fall, spring. Required of
all prospective majors who have ACT English scores under 24 and who
do not score 70 on GPS Exam. Course provides college credit but does
not count toward required 129 hours.

JMC 417 History of Mass Media (3-0-3), on demand. Survey of the
history of print and electronic media, with special emphasis upon
prominent individuals and events and religious periodicals. The media are

Advertising
JMC 178 Advertising Principles (3-0-3), fall, spring. Survey of
principles of advertising and their application to production, creativity,
use of mass media, business and management aspects of advertising.
JMC 378 Advertising Principles (3-0-3), fall, spring. Same as JMC
178, plus students demonstrate knowledge through an advanced project.
Prerequisite: JMC 110 or junior standing. Same as MKTG 378.
JMC 490 Advertising Creativity and Copywriting (3-0-3), fall.
Creativity, ideation, market analysis, campaign creativity, and creative
direction, creative writing, copywriting. Prerequisites: JMC 178 or 378.
JMC 491 Media Planning and Research (3-0-3), fall. An analysis of
the use of media in advertising and sales promotion campaigns. Emphasis
on planning concepts, strategy development, product and target analysis,
budgeting, audience measurement, buying tactics, and plan writing.
Prerequisites: JMC 178 or 378. Same as MKTG 491.
JMC 492 Advertising Campaign Management (3-0-3), spring.
Specifics of organizing and conducting advertising campaigns, selling,
planning, presentation, execution, follow-up, client relations, account
management. Prerequisites: JMC 178 or 378, 490, 491; ART 353.
JMC 496 Advertising Internship (1-0-3). On the job training for a
minimum of 160 hours under the advertising adviser and a supervisor in
an advertising agency or media advertising department. Prerequisites:
Senior standing and approval by the adviser.
News-Editorial
JMC 112 Journalistic Interview (3-0-3), spring, odd years.
Introduction to the journalistic interview process: how to acquire, how to
prepare, and how to conduct the interview. Emphasis will be placed on
preparation of quality questions.
JMC 224 Reporting (3-3-3), spring. A study of newspaper journalism
with an emphasis on public affairs reporting, public opinion surveys,
ethics, and laboratory work on the student newspaper. Required lab
grade must be C to pass course. Prerequisites: JMC 223.
JMC 341 Copy Editing (3-3-3), fall, spring. Principles and practice of
copy editing, headline writing, and photo editing. Required lab grade
must be C to pass course. Prerequisites: JMC 224 for journalism, newseditorial,
and public relations majors, and JMC 223 for advertising
majors.
JMC 342 Publication Design (3-0-3), fall, spring. Principles and
practices of typography, graphic journalism, and newspaper design.Required lab grade must be C to pass course. Prerequisite: JMC 223.
JMC 449 Opinion Writing (3-0-3), fall. A theoretical and practical
study of the editorial and column in the news media. Emphasis on critical
thinking and writing about current problems. Prerequisites: JMC 223,
224, 341, 418.
JMC 450 Feature Writing (3-0-3), spring. A study of newspaper and
magazine feature articles. Emphasis on identifying subjects, research,
interviewing, and writing. Prerequisites: JMC 223, 224, 341.
JMC 451 Electronic Publishing (3-3-3), summer. A conceptual and
practical study of the principles and tools of electronic publishing,
including graphics, pagination, typography, camera-ready production, and
the magazine format. Required lab grade must be C to pass course.
Prerequisites: JMC 342 or ART 353 or permission of instructor.
JMC 497 Journalism Internship (0-0-3), summer. On-the-job
training for a minimum of 160 hours under the news-editorial adviser and
a supervisor at a newspaper. Prerequisite: Senior standing as a newseditorial
major and approval by the adviser.
Photojournalism
JMC 233 Introduction to Photography (3-3-3), fall, spring. In
depth introduction to the basic principles of photography with emphasis
upon shooting assignments, processing film, and making quality prints.
Students must own a 35mm camera. Required lab grade must be C to
pass course. Same as ITEC 467. Course fee: $25.
JMC 234 Advanced Photography (3-3-3), fall, spring. Emphasis
upon development of camera technique, print making, studio lighting,
and portfolios. Students will work in black and white and color materials.
Students must have 35 mm camera. Required lab grade must be C to
pass course. Prerequisite: JMC 233 or permission of instructor. Course
fee: $65.
JMC 333 Photojournalism (3-3-3), fall, odd years. Study of the use of
the camera and photographs to report and tell a story in the media.
Extensive laboratory experience. Required lab grade must be C to pass
course. Prerequisite: JMC 233. Course fee: $25.
JMC 405 Photojournalism Portfolio (0-0-3), on demand.
Preparation of a senior photojournalism major's protfolio under the
guidance of the photojournalism adviser.
JMC 495 Photojournalism Internship (3-0-3), summer. On-the-job
training for a minimum of 160 hours under the photojournalism adviser
and a supervisor at a newspaper. Prerequisites: Senior standing as a
photojournalism major and approval by the adviser.
Public Relations
JMC 147 Public Relations Principles (3-0-3), fall, spring. Modern
concepts of public relations, emphasizing ways business and institutions
interpret themselves to society and communicate their messages to various
publics. Prerequisite: JMC 110.
JMC 348 Public Relations Methods (3-3-3), fall. A study of the
practical applications of public relations principles, including publicity
writing, media relations, publications, and campaigns. Required lab
grade must be C to pass course. Prerequisites: JMC 147, 223, 341.
JMC 494 Public Relations Case Studies (3-0-3), spring. A study of
issues and problems in public relations management, with emphasis on
problem-solving, evaluation, and application of public relations
techniques. Prerequisite: JMC 147, 348, or senior standing.
JMC 498 Public Relations Internship (0-0-3), summer. On-the-job
training for a minimum of 160 hours under the public relations adviser
and a supervisor in a public relations department of an agency, business,
hospital, university, or other institution. Prerequisites: Senior standing as
a public relations major and approval by the adviser.
Telecommunication
JMC 111 Announcing (3-3-3), fall, spring. Develops basic verbal skills
necessary to communicate on the air effectively. Areas of concentration
will include phonetic skills, proper diction, pronunciation, simultaneous
announcing, equipment usage, and FCC rules for operator practices.
Required lab grade must be C to pass course.
