INTRODUCTION
The curriculum of the Journalism and Mass
Communication Department is designed to prepare
students for service in agencies, corporations, and
institutions that use mass communication. This goal is
pursued in the context of the university's basic purpose of
"educating for Christian service and leadership throughout
the world."
Course work in the department carefully balances
theoretical and practical information about journalism and
mass communication. The curriculum in each area of
concentration is designed to help students master the
theoretical, historical, ethical, and legal foundation of their
chosen fields.
The faculty is devoted to the concept that a strong liberal
arts background is essential in journalism and mass
communication. Students are, therefore, limited to 39
hours in their area of concentration. In addition to the
required General Education courses (56 hours), students
are encouraged to take the remainder of their hours in art,
history, political science, sociology, human communication,
business, English, languages, sciences, or psychology. A
major must take a minor of at least 15 hours in one of
these fields.
State-of-the-art laboratories and a faculty that balances
strong academic and professional preparation complement
the unique purposes of the university and the department.
Student media operated by the department are KACU-FM,
a National Public Radio affiliate; KLGP, a campus radio
station; KUF-TV7, a low-power TV station; ACU Video, a
television production facility; Visions, a pioneering AllAmerican
video yearbook; the Optimist, a twice-weekly
All-American student newspaper; and the Prickly Pear, an
All-American yearbook. All of these media are produced
with up-to-date computer and electronic technology and
wire and audio services, operated so that the graduate is
proficient in contemporary media operations.
Professionally-oriented student organizations supplement
the student's preparation. Available are Alpha Epsilon
Rho, national honorary society for broadcast students; the
Advertising Club, affiliate of the American Advertising
Federation; Kappa Tau Alpha, national honor society for
