Secondary Certification Requirements
Students preparing to teach at the secondary level may
receive a BS with a major in Interdisciplinary Studies or a
BA or BS with a major in an academic field, as noted
below. Those who choose to major in an academic field
should see the appropriate section of this catalog for more
information. Courses marked with an asterisk (*) in the
following lists may also fulfill requirements in other areas.
Departmental requirements for secondary certification are
as follows:
1. Education, 18 hrs.: EDUC 311, 321, 412, 432, 499;
plus READ 322.
2. Major, 48-60 hrs.: Choose any option listed below.
All options in the first section lead to a degree in the
named academic field, except Social Studies, which
leads to a BS in Interdisciplinary Studies.
Certification in one teaching field:
Biology, 48 hrs.: BIOL 112/114; 113/115; 214, 312, 351,
353, 357, 362, 492/495, plus 7 hours from BIOL
367, 370, 465, 491, 497; CHEM 131*/133*,
132*/134*, 221/223.
English, 48 hrs.: ENGL 325, 459, 483; 3 hours from
ENGL 221*, 481, 484; 6 hours from ENGL 222,*
495, 496, 497; 6 hours from ENGL 362, 363, 464; 6
hours from ENGL 231*, 232*, 311, 376, 377, 378,
470; 351 or any additional upper-division literature
course from those listed above; 3 hours from ENGL
330, 331, 432; and 12 hours of a foreign language.
Only 6 hours of sophomore-level literature may apply
to this specialization. Students must have 30 hours of
upper-division English.
Life/Earth Science, 47 hrs.: BIOL 112/114, 113/115, 214,
353/357, 492/495; 4 hours from BIOL 291/293,
312, 351, 367, 370, 465, 497; BIOL 301; AGRO
233; CHEM 110; PHYS 101; and 12 additional
hours from one of the following fields: Agriculture
(in addition to AGRO 233), Chemistry (in addition
to CHEM 110 and the 8 hours required in General
Education), Physics, Math, Computer Science,
Physical Education, or Health.
Mathematics, 49 hrs.: MATH 127*, 183, 185, 186, 277,

Industrial Technology (Option mI), 49 hrs.: ITEC 100, 101,
117, 220, 230, 240, 340, 372, 382,465,480, and
18 hours (9 advanced) in Industrial Technology.
Social Studies, 51 hrs.: HIST 117, 118, 455, 474, 475,
479, 480, 495; GEOG 235, 354; ECON 260, 261;
POLS 225, 381, 487, 491,498. (Even though
Social Studies is a single certification teaching field,
it leads to a B.S. degree with a major in
Interdisciplinary Studies.)
Cerfication in two teacingfields
The following areas of specialization, when leading to a
BS with a major in Interdisciplinary Studies, require two
teaching fields taken from one of these three clusters: (1)

Arts, Generic Special Education, Physical Education; (3)
Social Science: History, Psychology, Sociology, English,
Business Administration, Journalism, Generic Special
Education, Physical Education, Political Science. Five of
these specializations may also lead to a degree within the
academic area (Biology, Computer Information Systems,
History, Journalism and Mathematics); these majors
require a second teaching field selected from any cluster

more information.)
