Departmental Requirements
Screening Requirements:
1. 30 hrs and a GPA of 2.3 to enroll in READ 263 and
362 or SPED classes.
2. 60 hrs and a GPA of 2.3 for all other READ classes.
3. 60 hrs and a GPA of 2.5 to enroll in EDUC or
EACH classes.
4. GPA of 2.5 required for graduation.
Except with prior approval by the chairman of the
Department of Education, those who complete their
degree program at Abilene Christian University must take
all of their professional education courses in residence at
the university.
Students must maintain a 2.5 GPA in order to do their
student teaching. Student teaching requires a minimum of
twelve weeks of all-day student teaching. The only
exception is Vocational Home Economics Education,
which requires ten weeks of student teaching. Available
endorsements are described below.
Special Notes
Senate Bill 994, passed by the Texas legislature in 1987,
mandated changes in teacher education programs. This
catalog is designed to meet those standards. Students
seeking certification to teach in elementary schools major
in Interdisciplinary Studies and earn the B.S. degree.
Students working toward secondary certification in the
two-field disciplines described later in this section are
advised to major in Interdisciplinary Studies and receive
the B.S. degree also. Students who seek certification in the
one-field disciplines described later in this section as well as
those students seeking all-level certification described later
may earn the B.S. or B.A. depending on the major chosen.FEE: A technology fee of $85 will be charged each
semester a student is enrolled in one or more courses
offered by the Department of Education. These courses
have the following prefixes: TECH, EDUC, EACH,
READ, and SPED.
Elementary Certification Requirements
Departmental requirements for the BS with a major in
Interdisciplinary Studies leading to elementary certification
are as follows:
1. Professional Education, 18 hrs.: EDUC 311, 321,
431, 470, 489. (If endorsements are added, 488
substitutes for 489; Generic Special Education
requires 488 and 495.)
2. Basic Interdisciplinary Courses, 30 hrs.: READ 263,
362, 450, 464; MATH 117; GEOG 235; MUSE
330; PE 333; ART 487; and CHEM 203. (CHEM
203 does not count for the General Education science
requirement).
3. Specialization, 18-24 hrs.: Students must choose a
specialization from the list below. Courses marked
with an asterisk (*) may also fulfill requirements in
other areas.
Art: ART 105, 106, 111, 112, 331, 341. (18 hrs.)
Biology: BIOL 112, 114, 113, 115, 214, 362, 492,
495; CHEM 110. (22 hrs.)
English: ENGL 221* or 222*, 231, 325, 330, 351,
363. (18 hrs.)
Generic Special Education: COMP 235, 353; PSYC
240; SPED 473, 474, 476, 477, 481. (24 hrs.) This
specialization is a Delivery System and requires a
separate section on the ExCET It also requires
EDUC 488 and 495 for Student Teaching.
Health: HED 112, 322, 324, 405; PSYC 252; PE
241. (18 hrs.)
History: HIST 117, 118, 480, plus 9 hours advanced
history. (18 hrs.)
