Army Reserve Officer's Training Corps 29
Army Reserve
Officer's Training
Corps
The Army Reserve Officer's Training Corps program in
Abilene is offered by the Rough Rider Army ROTC
Battalion located at Hardin-Simmons University. ROTC
courses count as elective credit towards degrees at Abilene
Christian University.
INTRODUCTION
The Army Reserve Officer's Training Corps develops
college-educated officers for the active Army, the Army
Reserve and the National Guard. It provides young men
and young women the opportunity to earn commissions as
Army officers at the same time they work toward academic
degrees. It also affords students the opportunity to pursue
either a civilian or a military career after college
completion.
The ROTC program provides all students an opportunity
to obtain applied leadership training and experience and to
increase their knowledge of United States military affairs.
Students will also acquire skills in the leadership
laboratories which they can use in life-long recreational
hobbies. Graduates have a long tradition of leadership and
service in the armed forces.
The Abilene University Consortium Agreement allows
students at Abilene Christian University and McMurry
University as well as Howard Payne University to
participate fully in the ROTC courses and extra-curricular
activities sponsored by the Military Science Department.
Uniforms, textbooks, instructional supplies, and other
essential equipment are provided by the Army to all
students in military science courses.
Program of Instruction
The Rough Rider Army ROTC battalion provides a
general military science curriculum without emphasis on
any specific branch of the Army. The curriculum is divided
into two segments: the Basic Program and the Advanced
Program. The Advanced Program, which is normally taken
during the third and fourth years, is designed to meet the
needs of students desiring an Army commission.
This program of instruction is designed to complement the
students' other college courses and to develop the skills,
attitudes, and the understanding needed to facilitate their
transition into the military profession. Students obtain a
broad educational base including, in addition to subjects
integral to their degree field, certain academic subjects of
particular value in both civilian and military pursuits.Desired learning outcomes for students and cadets include:
a general knowledge of the historical development of the
Army and its role in support of national objectives; an
understanding of the nature and operations of the Army;
development of the leadership and managerial potential of
the students to facilitate their future performance; a strong
sense of personal integrity, honor, and individual
responsibility, as well as other mental and moral standards
essential for military officers; knowledge of the human
relationships involved in and an understanding of the
responsibilities inherent in assignments within the military
service; and ability to communicate effectively both orally
and in writing. The program also strives to develop the
cadet's ability to evaluate and estimate situations before
making decisions, to know and understand people and how
to lead them, and to use the fundamentals of self-discipline.
It also teaches a set of standards for appearance and
performance as well as the ability to recognize these
standards in others.
