32 Art
BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE
The Bachelor of Arts degree provides opportunity to major
in art within the framework of a liberal arts degree. Major
requirements ranging from 48 to 51 semester hours allows
sufficient general elective hours for a minor, or its near
equivalent. Degree plans are available with concentrations
in art and graphic design. Interdisciplinary programs are
available in art/marketing and graphic design/advertising.
Departmental requirements for these programs are listed
below.
Admission Requirements
Before being admitted to this program, a student must
satisfy the requirements listed under "Initial Academic
Program," p. 15.
General Education Requirements
General Education requirements (University and Degree
Core requirements) for the BA are listed on p. 20. ART
101, HIST 117, 118, and PHYS 378 are required for all
art majors and partially fulfill the General Education
requirements for science and behavioral science.
Departmental Requirements for the Bachelor of
Arts Degree
Four degree plans providing different concentrations
within the art major are available. These are Art, Art/Marketing,
Graphic Design, and Graphic Design/Advertising.
A brief description with departmental requirements for
each is listed below.
Major Concentration: Art
This degree plan is for the student who wishes a major in
art while retaining a large number of elective hours for a
second major or the pursuit of other academic interests.
Departmental requirements for the BA in Art are as
follows:
1. Required Art courses, 21 hrs.: ART 105, 106, 111,
112, 213, 331, and 341.
2. Art selections, 15 hrs.: chosen from ART courses;
nine semester hours must be in one studio area of
sophomore or above courses.
3. Art history, 9 hrs.: ART 221, 222, 323.
4. Minimum cumulative GPA in major courses: 2.25.
General Electives
To obtain a total of 128 credit hours, the student seeking
the BA in Art must take 18 hours of general electives,
arranged to ensure 33 advanced hours. Electives may
include deficiency requirements in science and foreign
language.
Major Concentration: Art/Marketing
Designed for the student who wishes to combine training
in art with training in business and economics, this degreeplan meets the needs of individuals with career goals in
areas requiring art and business skills such as merchandising,
display, gallery work, and various media and agency
positions.
Departmental requirements for this degree plan are as
follows:
1. Required Art courses, 21 hrs.: ART 105, 106, 111,
112, 213, 331, and 341.
2. Art selections, 15 hrs.: chosen from ART courses;
nine semester hours must be in one studio area of
sophomore or above courses.
3. Required Business Administration courses, 24 hrs.:
ACCT 210, 211, ECON 260 (can count as BA
Degree Core requirement), BLAW 363, MGMT 330,
MKTG 340, 342, 343, or 378.4.
5.Art history, 9 hrs.: ART 221, 222, 323.
Minimum cumulative GPA in major: 2.25.General Electives
The student seeking the BA in Art/Marketing will have no
electives because of the interdisciplinary requirements of
the degree.
Major Concentration: Graphic Design
This degree plan is for the art major desiring a designoriented
program of study. The large number of elective
hours allows opportunity for in-depth study in other fields
that may be of practical or theoretical interest. All electives
should be approved by the student's adviser.
Departmental requirements for this degree plan are as
follows:
1. Required Art courses, 39 hrs.: ART 105, 106, 111,
112, 315, 341, 351, 352, 353, 371, 454, 455, and
456.
2. Art History, 9 hrs.: 221, 222, 323.
3. Minimum cumulative GPA in major: 2.25.
General Electives
To obtain a total of 128 credit hours, the student seeking
the BA in Graphic Design must take 15 hours of general
electives, arranged to ensure 33 advanced hours. Electives
may include deficiency requirements in science and foreign
language.
Major Concentration: Graphic Design/Advertising
This concentration combines training in art with that of
journalism and mass communication. It is designed for the
student who desires to enter newspaper, magazine or other
advertising and design fields. A 24-hour block of
communication courses is a major feature of this program.
Students wishing to pursue this program of study should
consult with advisers in both Art and Journalism and Mass
Communication departments.
