Interior Design is a four-year program which combines
courses in Home Economics/Family Studies, Art and Industrial
Technology with General Education requirements
as preparation for a career in business, industry, extension
service, or research. The curriculum is designed for men
and women interested in how technical and aesthetic
aspects of design affect residential and non-residential interiors.
Instruction in space planning, programming,
specifications, electrical and lighting design, color coordination,
furnishings and finishes, and presentation
methods provide a solid base for many job opportunities.
Some career opportunities are: residential/commercial interior
designer, product designer, space planner, sales representative
for a store or market, showroom manager,
interiors journalist or illustrator, specifications writer, display
designer, consumer consultant, and color and
materials consultant.
Departmental requirements for the BS in Interior Design
are as follows:
1. Required courses in Home Economics/Family Studies,
38 hrs.: HEFS 100, 401, 211, 221 or 222,241, 242,
243, 343, 344, 345, 346, 447, 403, 250 or 552.
2. Required courses in art, 18 hrs.: ART 101, 103, 105,
227,228, 355. (ART 101 fulfills the General Education
fine arts requirement.)
3. Other required courses, 15 hrs.: BIBM 590 (This fulfills
3 hours of General Education Bible requirement);
JMC 233; INDT 117, 361, 481.
4. Electives, 9-12 hrs. Recommended courses include
HEFS 331, 433 or 532; and INDT 362.BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN HOME
ECONOMICS DEGREE
Career opportunities for Vocational Home Economics
graduates include: teaching in junior and senior high
school, in community colleges, and in adult and continuing
education programs; employment as an extension home
economist; promotion and research of consumer products;
and working as a home economist in business or industry.
Vocational Home Economics majors are encouraged to
broaden their employment options by completing requirements
in a second teaching field, or by completing the
teaching endorsement requirements for teaching Kindergarten
or English as a Second Language. The demand for
bilingual Home Economists continues.
Admission Requirements
Before being admitted to the BSHE program, a student
must satisfy the requirements listed under "Initial
Academic Programs," p. 15.
To be unconditionally admitted to the Teacher Education
Program students must have:
1. Health and physical clearance by the university nurse.
2. Approval of the Dean of Students.
3. A minimum grade-point average of 2.5.
4. A minimum of 60 earned hours.
5. An average grade of C or above in required Freshman
and Sophomore English.
6. Recommendations from three Abilene Christian
University faculty members.*These courses are offered every other year. Check departmental course listings for semesters.
