The Pre-Professional Skills Test is mandated by the Commission
on Standards for the Teaching Profession with the
approval of the State Board of Education. Passing scores
for all three portions of this test were established by the
State Board. Students should take the Pre-Professional
Skills Test during their freshman or sophomore year. Application
for entry into the Teacher Education Program
should be made during the junior year when the first
professional education course (EDUC 210 or EDUC 311)
is taken. Junior and senior transfer students should take
the Pre-Professional Skills Test and apply for admission to
the Teacher Education Program during their first semester
at Abilene Christian University. Arrangements for taking
the Pre-Professional Skills Test are made in the University
Testing Office, and application for admission to the
Teacher Education Program is made in the office of the
Department of Education located in Chambers Hall.
General Education Requirements
General Education requirements for the BSHE are listed
on page 19. For the science requirement, BIOL 102 and
Chemistry are recommended.
Departmental Requirements
All student teaching programs are all-day only. Vocational
Home Economics requires a minimum of ten weeks of
student teaching. Endorsement programs and second
teaching fields require additional periods of all-day student
teaching. Students must maintain a 2.5 GPA in order
to student teach.
Except with prior approval by the Chairman of the Department
of Education and the Chairman of the Department
of Home Economics/Family Studies, those who complete
their degree program at Abilene Christian University must
take all of their professional education courses in
residence at the university.
Departmental requirements for the BSHE are as follows:
1. Required courses in Home Economics/Family Studies,
53 hrs.: HEFS 211, 212, 313, 221, 222, 323, 331, 532,
433, 140, 241, 344, 250, 551, 552, 360, 361, 362, 363,
364, and 365, and 3 additional hours selected from:
HEFS 315, 426, 552 or 553.
2. Required courses in professional education, 24 hrs.:
EDUC 311, 321, 341, 422; HEFS 470, 471, 472.
3. Other required courses, 6 hrs.: EDUC 210, BIBM 590
(This fulfills 3 hours of General Education Bible requirement).4. Restricted electives, 9 hrs.: to be chosen from Sociology,
Psychology, Economics, Foreign Language, Fine
Arts (approved courses in Art, Music, or Drama),and Humanities. (Six hours of textual Bible courses
may be counted as humanities electives.)

33-39Teacher Certification and Additional Endorsements
Students who wish to obtain Texas teacher certification
must pass the Teacher Certification Tests (ExCET) in pedagogy
(professional education) and in the appropriate
teaching field as mandated by Senate Bill 50. These tests
meet specifications of the Texas Education Agency. Passing
scores have been established at the state level. Additional
information regarding these tests is available
through the Department of Education.*These courses are offered every other year. Check departmental course listings for semesters.
**If 6 hours of Bible courses are counted as electives, only 3 additional hours are needed.
