30-33Departmental Requirements for Human Development and
Family Studies
A major in Human Development and Family Studies merges
theory and practical application in the study of individuals and families from a life-span perspective. Opportunity
is afforded in the Child Development Center for students
to observe and interact with young children.
Supervised experiences with community groups provide opportunities
for interaction with other ages.
The curriculum is focused on developmental stages, interpersonal
relations, and interactions among individual,
group, and societal forces as they affect personal and social
well-being within the context of couple, marriage, family
and peer relationships. Developing methods of
enriching personal and family living are important concerns
of the program.
Graduates with a major in Human Development and Family
Studies may work professionally in nursery schools and
day care centers, in juvenile homes or family support and
human service agencies, in extension, and in family life
education. Others use the human relationship emphasis as
the basis for occupations in business. Many go into
graduate programs in varied disciplines.
