impact of the Civil War upon some of the essential currents in the history
of the United States.
HIST 585 Russia (3-0-3), spring. Russian history from Kievan times to
the present, with special emphasis on the Soviet Union and Communist
ideology.
HIST 586 The Mexican-American in the Southwest (3-0-3), spring. A
survey of the Mexican-American experience in the southwestern United
States, emphasizing distinctive societal attributes, acculturation processes,
and the Chicano role in contemporary American development.
HIST 590 Mexico: Growth and Culture (3-0-3), spring. Major facets
of the Mexican experience, with emphasis on the personalities and institutions
that have shaped contemporary Mexico.
HIST 595 The Far East in Modern Times (3-0-3), fall. The uniqueness
of Asian backgrounds and experiences, with attention to American and
European relations with the Orient.
Anthropology
ANTH 101 Introduction to Anthropology (3-0-3), fall. This is the required
core course for the "International Studies" major. This introduction
to Anthropology provides an overview of Archeology; Physical, Linguistic
and Cultural Anthropology. The course challenges students to
look seriously at today's "global village" with its diversity of cultures and
to seek a fuller understanding of "tribal loyalties" in the midst of growing
international interdependence. An appropriate worldview is suggested,
in contrast to provincialism.
ANTH 511 Ethnography of US Culture (3-0-3), fall. This course is
designed for International or American students who have been enculturated
in an ethnic enclave significantly different from mainstream U.S.
culture. It provides an indepth study of American cultural traits, explores
culture shock and adaptation, and provides students with guided
field experiences of an ethnographic nature.
Geography
GEOG 235 World Geography (3-0-3), fall, spring. Nations and continents
of the world through a study of relief features, natural resources,
climatic factors, human occupations, and historical background.
GEOG 354 Historical-Cultural Geography (3-0-3), spring. Same as
HIST 354.
GEOG 400 Guided Study (3-0-3)*, on demand.
International Studies
INTS 499 International Studies Seminar (3-0-3). An advanced level
seminar, comprehensive in nature, wherein seniors integrate the various
disciplines of their International Studies program into a senior project.
Each project will be individually designed in co-operation with the instructor.FACULTY
