Department of Home Economics

The aim of the department is to prepare young women for the
important position of home making and for the vocations which
grow out of home making activities. The courses are arranged to
meet the needs of those students who desire a good foundation in
the subjects relating to problems of the home; for those who wish
to prepare themselves for teaching home economics; for those who
wish to enter commercial fields; and for those registered in other
departments of the College who may choose home economics
courses as a part of a liberal education.
Students in the other departments of Arts and Sciences may
use six semester hours of home economics as partial fulfillment
of the repuirements for natural science.
Requirements for Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics:A maximum of thirty-six semester hours is permitted in home
economics.
Minor: Bible, English, education, natural science, music, art,
speech, or physical education. Prescribed: General Chemistry (6
hours); physiology and personal hygiene (6 hours); child or adolescent
psychology (3 hours); home economics 300, 310, 323, 321,
324, 340, 353, 361, 380, 390; Art 320.
The students of this department may secure a Special Three
Year, Four Year, or Permanent Certificate in Home Economics from
the State Department of Education by satisfying the following requirements:1. Special Three Year Certificate-Satisfactorily complete
sixty semester hours, at least six of which shall be in English, six
in education, twelve in home economics; one of these courses must
include a methods course in home economics.
2. Special Four Year Certificate-Satisfactorily complete
ninety semester hours, at least six in English, six in education and
nine in home economics with three in methods.
3. Special Permanent Certificate-Complete one hundred and
twenty semester hours at least six in English, six in education,
and twenty-four in home economics with special methods course.
If a student wishes to get a Smith-Hughes Certificate, she may
do so by taking certain prescribed courses during three years in
Abilene Christian College, and taking her last year's work in a
school which grants Smith-Hughes Certificates.
