COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES
It is a reading of English translations of the best selections
from Greek classics. It will cover the entire age of Greek
Literature and will touch the best works in the several fields,
prose and poetry, epic, lyric, drama, tragedy, comedy. While
this does not take the place of studies in the originals, it will
give a passing acquaintance with the masters of Greek thought
and literature and will help much in literary appreciation in
English or other tongues. Written reports are required.
313.-Plato. Plato's Apology and Crito. Grammatical
equipment is brought to bear in reading and interpretation.
Word study. Greek philosophy studied by lecture and reference.
Individuality of the student is developed. Some attention
to emphasis and style.
322.-Demothenes. Demosthene's On the Crown. Appreciation
of this masterpiece of Greek oratory is sought.
Style is prominent. The historical situation is cleared up by
lecture.
333.-Homer. The Iliad. The class studies either the
first three books or a large part of these with other selections.
The Homeric age is considered. Attention is given to special
forms and to scansion.
332.-Later Greek Literature. On special solicitation of
the class this term may be devoted to reading in Greek comedy
and tragedy. Ordinarily, however, this term will be used in
reading later Greek authors to get acquainted with Hellenistic
Greek. With these will be included reading from two or
more books of the Septuagint and from the Apocalypse of
John. The main purpose is to show the later forms of the
Greek language and thus to prepare for the best work in the
Bible Courses.
343.-New Testament. Mark is made the basis of the
course. John read as parallel. Some reading in Luke. Composition
each week. Text: Westcott and Hort; Robinson, A
Short Grammar of the Greek New Testament. Thayer's lexiicn
and reference to Goodwin.
353.-New Testament. Two of the minor epistles carefully
studied. Matthew read as parallel. Texts: same as
Greek 343.49
