One item of economy that movie producciB might employ according
to a susceptible local young man la paying high salaries to
the actors for making love to the beautiful movie queens According
to the young man there is a thousand young men in every community
who would volunteer for the service on a gratuitous basis
Finland has been accomplishing some remarkable victories over
the Russian army but Russia with a population 52 times as large ns
Finland will finally exhaust the little country unless a substantial
degree of assistance comes from outside The situation is not unlike
the one in which a group of Americans who sought to have some
sport with a Chinaman said Well John we sec the paper says there
was a big battle in China in which one hundred Japs and one thousand
Chinese were killed The Chinaman merely blinked his eyes
mnd made no comment The next day they said Well John the paper
says there was another big battle in China yesterday in which
two hundred Japs and two thousand Chinese were killed Again John
merely blinked his eyes and said nothing The third day one of them
said Well John the paper says that there was a big battle in China
yesterday in which three hundred Japs and three thousand Chinese
were killed Velly fine John said by and by all Japs will be
killed Heroic and effectual as they are by and by all the Finns will
be exhausted
The Census of Distribution
Beginning this month employes of the government started call
ing on all classes of retailers as well as wholesalers and manufacturers
with forms to be filled out with business facts which when
compiled will constitute the 1939 Census of Distribution
The request for this date may annoy some retailers They may
not understand why the government should require this Information
unwarranted prying into
They may resent what they consider an
consider the study of distribution
their personal business affairs They may
wonder to what extent their figures will
tribution useless They may
be held in confidence
This government census of business is an important undertaking
of all kinds of business
the figures
by which
It is the only means
for comparison It Is closely studied by
can be brought together
economists legislators and many others
The figures that cover the retail trade will tell an interesting
convincing story one of which no member of a craft need feel
ashamed It is highly important for the government to have tills story
just as completely as psosible in the various volumes In which the
figures of other types of retail business are published
the bureau of the census
For more than half a year employes of
which will be used
have been putting together the questionnaires
this year But contrary to u great many government studies the
form which will be submitted to you is not the concoction of a lot
of theorists who know nothing about the retail business
of various
brought together representatives
Instead the bureau has
ious kinds of retailing and has prepared its questionnaire in consultation
with them
The 1940 questionnaire is simpler easier to fill out than the
ones previously used There will be a supplemental questionnaire asking
for information which some types of retail stores will be able to
answer without difficulty Where Uiis can be done it would be well
kf the retailers will provide the information
It is important for you to know that the law under which these
census figures are gatheied imposes upon census employes strict requirements
as to the confidential nature of individual returns You
may give the required information with implicit confidence In this
respect Even without the law the employes would hold the information
inviolate With the law they have a definite answer to any person
who might seek to pry
Because of the knowledge of how the questionnaires are prepared
how the work is done and of the value of having these business
figures available a merchant should not hesitate in coperatlng
fully in the study and to supply the information requested to the
fullest extent
Weekly Sermon
A Big Man Or A Little Man
I have in my back yard a trumpet vine that is growing upon a
trellis with a great mass of dark green leaves and orange red flowers
Though a hardy and a profuse plant I have noticed that it never
grows higher than the trellis that supports it Now and then a long
tendril reaches out as though it would lift itself nearer to the sun
but gaining weight it drops back and trails toward the ground in along
festoon My neighbor across the way has the same kind of trumpet
vine planted at the base of an old steel windmill tower Each
summer it strives to reach the very top of the high tower and is
truly a beautiful sight I have often thought as I have looked at these
vines how like man they ae The man who depends upon his own
strength who lives for himself and to himself alone never grows any
bigger than his own soul His own selfish limitations smother his life
and limit it always to little and selfish things But the man who takes
God into Ws life who takes at his word Christ and who makes him
the Eoal of his living can become as big as he cares to Like the trumpet
vine on the windmill tower he can keep on growing and never
reach the limit of his possibilities We have all seen men who represent
both types those who live little nanow constricted selfish lives
limited by their own human limitations and those who live lives
that grow and continue to grow in richness of spirit and into finer
and fuller and better living The difference is that one puts his trust
Ib klwwlf and the other puts his trust in God
