CG observes birthday
On June 14 we will celebrate the 210th birthday of the
United States Army and the 208th birthday of the American
flag.
FOR MORE than two centuries the Army has served with
distinction in the defense of our nation. Our flag and what it
represents has been an inspiration to soldiers wherever they
fought and remains the symbol of hope for millions of people
around the world seeking freedom.
As we observe this anniversary of the Army and the Flag we
pledge our continued best efforts to maintain combat readi-
ness essential for the peace and freedom of our great nation.

concern of paramount import-
ance to our nation whose prim-
ary threat to security is the
Soviet Union a country intoler-
ant of our political system our
values and our way of life. Milit-
ary strength is the foundation
of the Soviet Union’s power
and its adventurism outside its
borders and is the key to attain-
ment of Lenin’s long-term goal
ulations as are or shall be

to oversee the demise of West-
ern democracies.
Our goal is peace through
strength since it is a fact that
weakness invites attack from
the enemies of free people. To
repeat the 1985 Armed Forces
Week theme our resolve is to
preserve the peace through
leadership.
As Secretary of the Army
John O. Marsh Jr. and Army
hief of Staff Gen. John A.
W ickham Jr. are quoted as
saying in a recent proclamation
issued to the total Army:
“Army people and their fami-
lies military and civilian ac-
tive and reserve traditionally
view the Army’s birthday June
14 as a time for relection and
resolve.
“We reflect on our nation’s in-
stitutions and values to which
soldiers pledge their very lives.
We reflect also on our un-
swerving role in advancing the
American way of life and in pre-
serving the peace.
“OUR HERITAGE of service
in defense of freedom brings a
message to friend and foe alike:
We remain committed to those
ideals for which American sol-
diers have fought on battle-
fields throughout the world. In
so doing we buttress both our
high sense of purpose and our
strength of will. We stand un-
ited in our response to any
threat upon our nation’s free-
dom by maintaining our leader-
ship as a fighting force.
“As an Army fortified by its
tr a itio of lle in
leadership we forge a path to
peace and prosperity for today
tomorrow and beyond.
“On this the Army’s 210th
anniversary we hope you share
with us our renewed commit-
ment to the principles and ob-
jectives on which the Army and
the United States were founded
and to which in the words of
America’s Declaration of Inde-
pendence ‘we have pledged
our sacred honor.’
