Sales Tax Allocations Remain Positive
By Nancy Walker
Current reports by the State Comptroller's Office
detect that local sales tax allocations remain positive
in most Cross Timbers cities. Comanche, Eastland,
and Hamilton all experienced increases in 1999 sales
tax allocations over 1998 figures while Dublin and
Stephenville posted only small declines.
Comanche posted a 12.2 percent increase in
January-July 1999 allocations when comparison is
made to the year before. Its $243,927 figure is 20
percent higher than the 1997 aggregate.
Eastland reported a 3.6 percent increase in sales
tax allocations between 1998 and 1999. The latter
year's January-July total of $376,820 is 9.5 percent
higher than the figure posted two years earlier.
Hamilton reported the most significant increase
of all Cross Timbers counties. Its $190,921 allocation
total reflects gains of 16.1 percent and 29.7 percent
over 1998 and 1997 values.
Dublin posted January-July sales tax allocations
of $120,404 in 1999. This value is 1.8 percent below
the same period last year but is 69.1 percent above the
figure posted in 1997.
Stephenville noted the greatest decline of all local
cities between 1998 and 1999. Its $1,573,823 rebate
total is 4 percent less than the 1998 amount but is 7.7
percent greater than the 1997 total.
Sales tax allocations, a much needed revenue
source for local governments are collected by the
State Comptroller's Office. These rebate values are
also useful in estimating local taxable sales.
