Erath County's unemployment rate moved from 3.2
percent in January to 2.2 percent in April before re-
bounding to 3.1 percent in June as students flooded the
market seeking summer employment. The 2.7 percent
average for this statistic compares favorably to the 2.9
percent figure for the first six months of 1998.Bosque County began 1999 with a 3.8 percent job-
less statistic. This figure declined to 3.1 percent in
April, then moved to 4.7 percent in June. This year's
3.8 percent mean for the January-June period falls sig-
nificantly below the 4.8 percent average reported last
year.
Comanche County's unemployment rate fell from
4.1 percent at 1999's beginning to 3.1 percent in May
and climbed back to 4.1 percent in June. The 3.7 per-
cent average for this year's first six months compares
favorably to last year's 4.0 percent mean.
Eastland County reported a 5.3 percent jobless rate
in January. This figure declined to 4.6 percent in April
before rebounding to 5.9 percent in June. This year's
5.1 percent average unemployment rate is higher than
the 4.8 percent figure noted last year.
Hamilton County's jobless statistic fell from 5.8
percent in January to 4.4 percent in May then advanced
to 5.0 percent in June. This year's average rate of 5.0
percent is significantly higher than the 3.1 percent val-
ued posted last year.
Unemployment figures are reported by national and
state agencies on a monthly basis. National and state
statistics are adjusted for normal seasonal variations, but
county figures are not seasonally adjusted.Cross Timbers Population Growth Stalls
By Nancy WalkerData from the Census Bureau indicates the total
population of the five-county Cross Timbers area de-
clined by 0.1 percent between 1997 and 1998. Three
counties reported population declines over this period,
one showed an increase, and one posted no change.
In 1998, Bosque County reported a total popula-
tion of 16,557. This figure falls 0.6 percent below the
1997 value and is 0.7 percent below the 1996 esti-
mate.
Eastland County's estimated population value of
17,591 is 1.6 percent below the 1997 figure and is 1.9
percent less than the estimated 1996 statistic.
Hamilton County reported a population of 7,603
in 1998. This figure shows a decrease of 0.4 percent
from the year before and an increase of 0.4 percent
over the 1996 total.
Erath County's population was 31,562 in 1998.
This figure represents an increase of 1.1 percent over
the year before and 2.3 percent over the figure for two
years earlier.
Comanche County's 13,568 figure shows only
minimal growth over the previous two years. Last
year's figure reveals an increase of only three personsover the previous year and is only 42 higher than the
1996 figure.
