Figures Reveal Weak Sales Trends
The State Comptroller's office reports weak sales
trends in most Cross Timbers counties for the fourth
quarter of 1991. These figures were generally consistent
with slow sales for the previous three periods, resulting in
disappointing aggregate 1991 sales patterns.
Erath county merchants reported $115.9 million in
gross sales between October and December of last year.
This value is 10.1 percent above the figure for the year
before, and 21 percent greater than the fourth quarter, 1989
sales statistic. The fourth quarter increase reflects ad-
vances in the agriculture, construction, manufacturing, and
services sectors. Both wholesale and retail sales moved
lower, when compared to the year before, while transpor-
tation and public utilities revenues were virtually un-
changed. Total 1991 sales were $336.8 million. This value
is only 0.4 percent above the figure posted the year before,
but is 8.5 percent greater than the 1989 statistic.
Bosque county experienced disappointing sales last
year. While its $37.6 million fourth quarter sales value is
12.8 percent above the year before, it is seven percent
below the 1989 total. Total 1991 sales of $122.8 million are
10.8 percent below the year before, and 10.9 percent less
than the value posted two years earlier.
Comanche county also reported weak 1991 sales. Its
$43.6 million fourth quarter sales value is 25.1 percent less
than the year before, and 33.1 percent below the 1989
value. Total 1991 sales of $148.6 million are 10.5 percent
less than the previous year, and 9.3 percent below the 1989
figure.
COUNTY GROSS SALES
January - December
Millions of DollarsSOURCE: Stt Comptroller' Office
Eastland county's gross sales statistics indicate a
leveling of 1990's explosive growth pattern. The fourth
quarter's $112.6 million sales total is 3.9 percent less than
the year before, but is 30.3 percent above the value posted
two years earlier. Total 1991 sales of $310.4 million are 4.9
percent greater than the 1990 figure, and 31.8 percent
above the 1989 aggregate.
Hamilton county reported gross sales of $49.2 mil-
lion between October and December of last year. This
value represents losses of 2.7 and 12.1 percent when
compared to the two previous years. This county's $96.3
million January-December sales aggregate falls short of
both the $113.1 million figure for 1990 and the $112.2
million total for 1989.
Jobless Rates Indicate
Uncertain Recovery
Rising unemployment rates in both the United States
and Texas accompanied slow economic growth during
the second quarter. Jobless rates in both markets were also
above 1991 levels.
The nation added 126,000 new jobs in April, and the
unemployment rate fell from 7.3 to 7.2 percent. The
service sector posted its largest increase in almost two
years, manufacturing added employment, and econo-
mists raised hopes of a strengthening recovery. The May
labor market report dampened these hopes. A modest
increase in health service employment was overwhelmed
by a surge in new job seekers, and the unemployment
statistic rose by three-tenths of a percent. June's labor
market report was even more dismal, as the economy lost
117,000 jobs, and the idleness rate rose to 7.8 percent.
Then nation's jobless statistic averaged 6.8 percent in the
second quarter of last year.
The Texas labor market exhibited a pattern similar
to the U.S. economy over this time span. Joblessness
dipped from 7.6 percent in March to 7.4 percent in April,
then rebounded to 7.5 and 8.2 percent in May and June. In
Texas too, the number of job seekers increased faster thanCross Timbers Business Re port
