EARLY AUSTIN COUNTY FAM.ILIES
Compiled by
Olive Cartwright
A number of years ago, writes Mrs. Cartwright, she was shovn
a notation in a diary concerning her grandmother's birth. This
aroused her Interest and she began to copy the diary, even though
few of the fax.lles were her cwr. people. After a day spent copying,
she would spend the evening asking questions of Miss Atta
Wiley, owner of the diary, concerning the people whose names she
had come across in the record, many of whcm were personally known
to Miss Viley. Notes were made of the answers. Later questionnaires
and correspondence with members of the fanilles concerned
augmented the information and clarified questionable points.
. There is one large book of two hundred handwritten pages
which is Sarah Charlotte (Pier) Wiley's diary. The peges are
large enough that It takes one and a half typed pages to eoual
one handwritten poge. Another diary is that of Mrs. Lucy (:erry)
Pier, wiefe of Jampe Bradford Pier and iot.her of Sarah Pier. This
diary ^s in fourteen little books, written on advertising booklets
between and through the lines of print and in the margins. The
diaries go nearly to 1870.
It ib from the diaries, the correspondence, the questionnaires
and conversaticre that the data on these early Austin County families
has been pieced toget..er. Sources for each family are given,
but the exact words of the diary ere not always quoted since such
a statement as "Sue has a fourth daughter" means little out of
context.
All the families were early in Austin County, some coming to
Texas in the 1620's. Mrs. Cartwright will be glad to have corrections
or additions to these records or to hear from descendants.
