Kdst of the record on this family came from a letter written
by Claude 1t. Bethany, Principal of cwle Elementary School, Bryau,;
Texas,dated Aug. 6, 1939, part of which Is quoted.
"James W. Bethany, son of Wllalla Bethany, wras born in Ala-ra.e
about 1620 or 1821. His father wasne a native of South Carolina
and sero of ThoI as Bethanv iho 1;as born in South Carolinr in 1777.
JameIs :. was married to Adaline Wood, also a native of Alabama
ihose mother ^.re a YiRs Lee of the famous Virginia family of Lees.
Their first two children were born in Alabama. These vere Thomas
rr.d Vary. With these two children and a few slaves the family.:grated
to Texas in 1846 or 1849 taking six months for the trip
with ox wagons. Settling In the part of Texas that had been Austin's
colony, they became one of the pioneer families of Austin
Coun.ty. For a year or two they rented from Andrew Jackson Bell,
but soon found a piece of unsettled land near Felsonville, bought
it and added to it untll there was about 2000 acres of rich black
land In the plantation..
J. I!. Bethany died about 1689 in his plantation home-- at
that tile much smaller because of bequests to his children. His
wife remained there two or three years, then built a small home
In Bellvl.le and occupied It. The plantation was sold about 1893.
A.aline Bethany died in 1921 at the age of 96.
During the early years of his residence in Austin County, J.W.
et)::any was appointed arbitrator of land cl1aii.s and served his
state in t.;:at capacity although he never offered for any public
office--so far as I know."
