DALLAS.
A (orreipondant of tbe St. Louis Times
writing from Pallia under date of April
2 gWes his opinion ofDnlUi nl ber
prospect) s follows:
Again IrnatinR my very valuable pc-rnoo
In the mercies of tlie Texas Centrnl Rnil-
tosiI for a ride thirty. one miles soulb of
McKinney I found Dallas located on the
north bank of the Trinity rirer and in
almost the ajact center of Dallas county.
The business prospects of tbis city are
not excelled Dy toons of any town in
Northern Texas. Her merchants are
feeling happy and contented under tbe
Influence of a large reliable trade and
It pleases me to ste that St. Louis en
joys the confidence and patronage of the
mnjnriiyoi time Diistneii men.
The population of Dallas has inoreased
wonderfully in the last year. It is now
estimated at seven thousand. The streets
re wide well graded and cross each oth
er at right s ngles. In oonsequenoe of the
toil being gravelly they do not become
10 muddy under (be influence of rain as
in other cities of the State. The princi
pal business streets running east and
west are Aim aiam ana commerce
Those running north ana south are
Houston Jefferson Market Austin La-
mar and Poydras.
Uuildinzs here are superior to any we
have seen in Texas. Tbe majority are of
weed although a great many are built of
bricK a very tew or concrete and other
of stone. The court bouso on which work
linn been suspended for some time past
owing to luck of money will be a magnifi-
cent structure for this country and is to
cost one hundred thousand dollar'. It
will be completed this year. The mate-
rial used is fine stone quarried about
seven miles from the city.
Brrck of s good quality are manufac-
tured here nnd put into walls for twolve
dollars per thousand.
The Trinity is spanned at the termina-
tion of-Jlain street a bridge 300 feet
long built by a joint stock company nt a
cost of $80000 gold. It is constructed
entirely of wrought-iron brought from. lo-
in Kansas by way of the St. Louis Mo-
bile New Orleans nnd flalvcston nnd
killed by ox teuws front Corsicana to tbis
point. The total freight was wore than
tbe first oost of the iron. This instance
aill show something in regard to the ben-
efit derived by people of tbis seotion from
direct railway communication with St.
Louis. The bridge was completed March
li 1H72 nnd is paying 2 per cent per
month on the investment.
Another important public enterprise is
tlie Dallas Street railway extending from
tlie courlhousof to tho II. & T. C railroad
depot a distance of a mile and a quar'er.
it was started February 7 1873 by n cor-
porate company with a capital stock of
14000. The officers are among the lead-
ing men of Dallas 0. M. Swink presi-
dent W. Q. Sterretl seoretary and 8. J.
Adams treasurer i'hey claim that it
pays i!0 percent peranuuin.
Dallas has one daily and two weekly
papers. The Dallas Herald (daily) is a
first class Democratic paper and wo pre-
dict for it great success. Of the two week-
lies tbe News is Democratic and Norton's
Intolligencer is Republican.
There are sovcrnl churches here used
by the MethodintsDupti8ts Episcopalians
Presbyterians Christians and Catholics. I
al.ro notice a female collogo a free public
library and about a dozen schools.
The town has two large hotels and
llnee or four smaller ones. Tl t favorite
is the Crulohficld House which deserves a
liberal patronage for its good manage-
ment. The manufacturing intorests are repre-
ssed by two planing mills threa flour-
it'g mills nn iron and brass foundry sev-
eral carriage and wagou factories aud a
sash and door faotory.
Now as I have exhausted my slook of
information in regard to the city it would
be well to consider the people. A more
liberal whole-souled class of men cannot
he found in any country than it has been
my fortune to meet during my stay here.
1 wish particularly to claim your columns
as a means of returning thanks to the
Dallas Commercial Club for their very
kind reception not only of your corre-
spondent but of all St. Louis men who
chance to come here. D. R. F.
The Traffic tu Slnvca In Egypt.
The correspondent of tho London Daily
Telegraph who accompanies Sir Itartle
l'rere's expedition to take steps for the
abolition of tho slave trade in Africa in
a recent letter sends the following notes
of the iruflio iu slaves in Egypt :
Kvcry class of sooiety from Pashas and
Beys down to a pretty shop-keeper in-
dulges in tbe luxury and vice which it af-
fords. No one oan pretend to respecta-
bility a sort of social franchise without
this property qualification. No unmarried
man can obtain lodgings in a respectable
quarter of a town unless he has a wife or
a female slave. Thus men who visit large
business centres and who aro compelled
to live there for a time boy female slaves
whom they re-sell or otberwiso dispose of
when ibey leave for their homes. All
this taken together with the extent of the
country and the population warrants the
conclusion that the absorption of slaves in
Egypt is onormous.
There are no open markets in Cario
neb as the mart at Zanzibar for tho sale
of slaves; but I am informed by natives
that private establishments for tbe pur-
Pose abound intbe native towns where nn
Egyptian can buy slaves without any dif-
ficeulty whatever. Such is also the oase
in every town in the interior where tbe
trnffi.) is more open. There are two
races of slaves sold ic Egypt tbe white
nd the black. The former imported
from Turkey are highly pritod and are
bought onlv bv fill rich. Tlinv in o.n.
