has been requested by the De
fense Department to provide
the Armed Forces with 266
physicians and 145 dentists dur
ing the month of June. All of
the physicians will go to the Army
America's newest Secretary of
the Army Robert T. Stevens
comes to President Eisenhower's
official family from the ranks of
industry.
Former board chairman of the
ROBERT T. STEVENS
Secretary of the Army
textile firm of J. P. Stevens & Co.
Inc. and a director in several other
industries Mr. Stevens also serv
ed in both world wars.
In WD he was a second lieu
tenant of artillery from Sept. 4
1918 until his separation Dec. 4
1918. In 1941 Mr. Stevens attend
ed a special civilian course at the

He served with the Quartermas
ter General Procurement Office
between Jan. 15 1942 and Oct. 9
1945 where he attained the rank
of colonel. He was on temporary
duty in Europe near the war's end.
Mr. Stevens was appointed a
civilian aide to the Secretary of
the Army Mar. 15 1952. His expe
rience in government and as a
liaison official between govern
ment and industry dates back
much further.
He was an administrative rep
resentative in the industry section
of the National Recovery Admin
istration 1933 head of the Textile
Section National Defense Advi-

Classes In Safety
Conducted At Pool
For Post Guards
A school on water safety is be
ing conducted at Pool No. 1 behind
the Sports Arena for the prospec
tive lifeguards here on this post.
Mr. Robert H. Lucey of Houston
a first aid and water safety instruc
tor is conducting classes daily at
the pool.
Upon completion of the school
each student will know the skills
of life saving and will be able to
teach the methods of swimming
Thirty-five hours are being devot
ed to the teaching and practical ap
plication of life saving techniques
There are 22 swimmers attending
classes each day and when they
finish the course they will have
earned their life saving certificate
and act as lifeguards at one of the
six pools on the post.

AT POST LIBRARY
A new service at the post
Library the "coke room" will be
opened Saturday. Formerly an of
fice behind the main desk the
coke room" will contain a Coca
Cola machine and two other dis
pensers for candy and cookies.

About $13300
The final total of the Fort Hood
1953 March of Dimes campaign will
be "about $13300" according to Lt.
William C. Mahaley assistant
March of Dimes representative for
the Post.
This expected final total which
will be finally compiled by to
morrow is $1300 more than the
original estimate made from the
first mass official tally of the
funds. The backbone of the addi
tional amount will consist of ap
proximately $1000 to be turned
in by Gray Air Force Base.
