2 McMurry College Chieftain
An open letter to McMurry former students
about Homecoming '72
Dear Fellow McMurry Alumni:
The dates to remember are November 10-11
for Homecoming '72.
Our Alumni Association is planning a very
special reunion at Homecoming for all those who
sang under the direction of Gypsy Ted Sullivan
Wylie (Mrs. Robert B.) from 1923 to 1950.
Gypsy Ted Sullivan was a member of
McMurry's original faculty. She was dean of
fine arts from 1923 until 1947 and directed all
choral groups — including Chanters — until 1950.
During the early years she organized many
special groups to travel and to sing with the
Boys' Glee Club and the Girls' Choral Club.
These two clubs occasionally sang together for
a "Chanters' Frolic." The Chanters were
formally organized as a mixed chorus in 1929
when a constitution was adopted.
Mrs. Wylie will be honored with a 10
o'clock coffee on Saturday morning of
Homecoming.
There was an announcement mailing this
summer to the more than 600 GTSW Chanters
for whom we have a current address. The
response has been fantastic. Many new
addresses have been added and all indications
point to one of the largest reunions in recent
McMurry history.
Those of you who were not GTSW Chanters
may ask, "What's in it for me?"
If you attended McMurry before 1951 or
1952 — or 1953 for that matter — there will be
many of your McMurry friends at the GTSW
Chanters' Reunion. Why don't you come home
this year and join in the fun?
If you have attended McM since 1950,1
believe you just might enjoy a Chanters' Frolic.
You will probably enjoy "the old grads looking
foolish" at the Saturday Reunion Luncheon when
Mrs. Wylie will direct a mass chorus of all
GTSW Chanters. (How would you like to sing
"together" after more than 20 years? We, at
least, believe we will sound good.)
The Homecoming football game with Austin
College is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Saturday
and should end by 7:30 p.m. for the benefit of
those who must travel home Saturday evening.
Theme of the students' Homecoming
production is "A Night in Vaudeville." The
first performance will be Friday evening with
a repeat of the musical Saturday afternoon.
Of course, this is also the year for
reunions of the "classes of two" — 1932, 1942,
1952 and 1962. An all-alumni art show is
scheduled in the new Ryan Center of Fine Arts
for Saturday. Bring or send your paintings.
A tentative schedule of activities can be
found in this CHIEFTAIN. I urge you to make
a special effort to attend Homecoming '72 on
November 10-11.
