Wond power, dairy digesters on tap at
renewable energy forum in Stephenville
AUSTIN—Experts on renewable energy from across
the state will gather in Stephenville in late January for
a forum on how rural communities and agriculture in
Texas can benefit from developing wind power, solar
power, biomass and other forms of renewable energy.
The forum, "Renewable Energy Opportunities for
Rural Communities and Agriculture," will be from 8 a.m.
to 5 p.m. on Jan. 26, at the Texas AgriLife Research and
Extension Center, 1229 North Hwy 281 in Stephenville.
The event is presented by the Rural Alliance for
Renewable Energy (RARE). It is sponsored by the
Agrilife Research and Extension Center in Stephenville
and by RARE members including Texas Department of
Rural Affairs (TDRA), Texas Department of Agriculture,
Comptroller's State Energy Conservation Office, Texas
Farm Bureau and Texas Renewable Energy Industries
Association.
"This forum will be an opportunity for dairy farmers,
rural community leaders and others to get information
first hand on how they might benefit from developing
their renewable energy resources," said Charlie Stone,
executive director of TDRA.
The forum will feature presentations by state agen-
cies and renewable energy companies on the impact of
renewable energy on rural communities in Texas and on
the development of wind power and transmission for
wind power in the state.
Other topics will include utilizing anaerobic digesters
to produce energy from dairy cow manure. An update
will be presented on Tarleton State University's new
Southwest Regional Dairy Center, a model dairy that
will implement innovative energy efficiency and energy
conversion technologies such as converting manure into
biofuels and biogas.
Bob Avant, Texas AgriLife program director, will
brief forum attendees on the latest in biofuels research
in Texas. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural
Development will discuss financial help for renewable
energy projects for agriculture and rural businesses.
Cost of the forum is $10, paid on site, and seating is
limited to 85. To register, email rare.forum@tdra.state.
tx.us or call (512) 936-7878. For more information, see

Ice storm preparedness: Supplies and special needs
Continued from pagel
and 12, will be played with the hopes of bringing in
money for the American Cancer Society.
"We picked these games because the middle school
and high school have back to back games," Jill Locklar,
SMS girls coach, said. "The other schools are also on
board. It just works out."
The American Cancer Society is near and dear to the
hearts of the Sweetw ater basketball teams, according to
Locklar. There are many individuals and families that
have seen and felt the affects of cancer.
Currently, the school secretary, Velia Gomez, is fight-
ing cancer and a middle school student is also going
through the fight,
"We all know what it takes and how it affects our life,"
Locklar said. "It's a good thing for kids to experience
and to realize that there are ways to help people that are
going through tough times."
This is the second year that the middle school girls
have done this fundraiser. This is the first time that the
high school girls have been involved.
"We are asking everyone to wear pink to the Monday
and Tuesday game," Locklar said.
During half-time at the high school game, First
Financial Bank of Sweetwater will be sponsoring a free-
throw contest/ three point contest. There will be a small
donation to take part in the contest, but the chosen per-
son will have the chance at possibly winning $100.
"If either basket is missed then the money will be
donated to the American Cancer Society," Locklar said.
The middle school will have a paper airplane contest
in between games and in both gyms, that will be spon-
sored by Wal-Mart. The person that gets their airplane
the closest will win a $50 Wal-Mart gift card. There
will be a dollar donation required to take part in the
contest.
Shirts had to be ordered through Wednesday for those
wanting a t-shirt. Locklar said that there will be a few
extra shirts ordered. Shirts cost $10.
The Lady Colts game will be at 5 p.m. and 6:15 p.m.
and the Lady Mustangs will play at 5 p.m. and 6:30
p.m.
For more information or to order a shirt contact Carla
Lambert at clamber@sweetwater.esc14.net, Jill Locldar
at jlock@sweetwater.esc14.net, or Sandra Graham sgra-
ham @sweetwater.esci4 .net.
Emergency supplies you will need for an ice storm are
similar to supplies you will need in any emergency but
there are some additional items. These include kitty
litter or sand to keep sidewalks and steps clear of ice, a
windshield scraper for the car, warm clothes and extra
blankets.
Ice storms pose a major challenge to anyone with spe-
cial health care needs, especially if you use equipment
that requires electricity. If you require dialysis, an oxy-
Sen tank or other intensive treatment, make emergency
ealth care plans now. Coordinate with a neighbor who
can check on you daily. Individuals who require daily
medications should have at least one week's worth of
medicine on hand. Plan what you will do for medica-
tions that need to be refrigerated if the power is out.
Winterize your vehicle before a storm. Keep the gas
tank full to prevent the fuel line from freezing. In a
severe ice storm, lines may be down and power out for
a week or more.
Here is a check list that will serve you well in emer-
gencies:
• One-week supply of non-perishable food, one gallon
of bottled water per person, per day, coolers for food
and ice storage
• Credit cards and cash (banks and ATMs may not
have power)
• Battery-operated radio, NOAA Weather Radio and
extra batteries or hand crank radio, cell phones and
chargers
• First-aid kit, seven-day supply of prescription medi-
cations, copies of prescriptions, special medical items,
hearing aids and batteries, eye glasses
• Supplies for a service animal including food, iden-
tification tags, proof of up-to-date vaccinations and
veterinarian contact
• Manual can opener, knife, tools, booster cables, fire
extinguisher, duct tape, tarp, rope, flashlight with extra
batteries
• Supplies for babies, the elderly, family members
with special health care needs, and food and supplies
for pets
• Medical equipment and assistive devices (catheters,
augmentative communication devices, cane, wheelchair,
scooter, walker, dressing aids, oxygen, tubing, feeding
supplies, drinking straws),extra batteries and chargers,
