Nature 's Showcase a must-see during Fall oliage festival
Following the recent rains, the
changing foliage, profusion of
wildflowers and lush grasses have
provided an amazing show for
area flora watchers. During the
Fall Foliage Festival weekend Oc-
tober 18-19, locals and visitors
alike will have a special chance to
experience what our region has to
offer in Nature's Showcase at
Lake Marvin.
A Texas Prairie Rivers Region
presentation, the Showcase will
feature archeology talks, wildlife
demonstrations and photography,
guided nature tours, wagon rides,
an update on the progress of
eco-tourism in the area—and
good food.
Inside the lodge an unusual ad-
dition to the Showcase is a Prairie
Chicken Theater. A blind built and
used for the 2003 spring viewing
of the lesser prairie chicken
booming rituals will be erected. A
film showing prairie chickens in
their natural habitat will run ev-
ery half hour on a T.V set up inside
the blind. This is a great chance to
observe a bird many people have
never seen that is a year-round
resident of Hemphill, Lipscomb,
Wheeler and Donley counties in
the Texas Panhandle.
The photography of Dick
Wilberforce and Ted Eubanks will
be on exhibit and both men will be
on hand to meet visitors and ex-
plain their work. Eubanks will
speak at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday
about the progress of the Texas
Prairie Rivers Region initiative,
an economic tourism organization
formed five years ago.
At 10 a.m. both days Jimmy
Walker of Amarillo will be on hand
to demonstrate falconry and dis-
play the gear involved in this an-
cient and specialized skill. Doug
Wilkens of Perryton, an
avocational archeologist who is a
steward with the Texas Historical
Commission Office of State Ar-
cheology, will speak both days at 1
p.m. on the historical significance
of various digs in the region.
Wildlife Technician Bob Rog-
ers of the Gene Howe Wildlife,
Management Area will have some
of his wild friends on display at the,
lodge on Sunday and will share his
expertise on the natural world.
Naturally Yours of Lipscomb
will handle concessions this year,
offering flavorful posole and torti-
llas or hunger-bustin' chili and
cornbread from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
both days. Dutch oven cobbler
and ice cream will be available all
day. A tent will be set up south of
the lodge for diners and the food
will be served from the south
kitchen windows to ease conges-
tion inside the lodge.
Wagon rides around Lake,
Marvin will be offered both days
by a Cheyenne, Oklahoma crew:
10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday, and 10
a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday.

Live falcon demonstration
Licensed falconer Jimmy Walker of Amarillo will provide a live demonstration with his beautiful
birds at Nature's Showcase at the Lake Marvin Lodge. In the photo above taken at the 2001 Fall
