Canadian's Fall Foliage Festival a crowd pleaser
What's not to like about the an-
nual rite the River City has
dubbed the annual Fall Foliage
Festival? During the third week-
end in October Canadian will pull
out the stops to provide a variety
of recreational and cultural op-
portunities for visitors.
Both days, Friday and Satur-
day, October 18-19, visitors may
take unescorted drives around
Canadian and Lake Marvin. Maps
will be available at the Welcome
Center at the Chamber of Com-
merce Office :at 216 South 2nd
Street, open Saturday 9 a.m.-5
p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
One of the most popular events
is the Tour of Homes, a special
treat for visitors. The homes of
Mr. and Mrs. George Arlington,
Mrs. and Mrs. Alan Hadaway, Dr.
and Mrs. Malouf Abraham, and
the guest cabin at the Shannon
Ranch will be featured. Kim's
Cottage on Main Street and
Arrington Ranch House Lodge
south of Canadian will also be
open for viewing. Tickets for the
home tour are, $10 per person,
children 12 and under are free;
and can be purchased at any of the
house's listed, at the Arts and
Crafts Show information table or
at the Welcome Center.
The River Valley Pioneer Mu-
seum is featuring the "Art from
the Ruins" exhibit in the Gallery
Room. Created by artist Doug
Ricketts of Lipscomb, the exhibit
is sponsored by the Canadian Arts
Alliance and will begin traveling
the Panhandle area in November.
Comprised of nine pieces, "Art
From the Ruins" tells the story of
pioneers Davy and May Wright
and in the process becomes a
physical narrative for High Plains
history. A reception for Ricketts
will be held 2-4 p.m. on Saturday.
The museum is open 10 a.m.-6
p.m. on Saturday and 1-4 p.m. on
Sunday.
Art lovers will also have the op-
portunity to meet the Fall Fo-
liage Poster Artist, Cara Dawn
Macias, on Sunday at the City
Drug Soda Fountain. The Cana-
dian Arts Alliance will host a re-
ception for Macias from 2-4 p.m.
Her "Peace of Fall" pastel will be
on display and posters will be
available for purchase.
The Ranch and Wildlife Pho-
tography of John Wright will be
exhibited at an office building at
the corner of Panhandle and 2nd
Street. The Picture Canadian
Art Exhibit and Sale will be held
at the Winton Academy of Art at
216 Main Street. On Saturday the
hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and on
Sunday 1-5 p.m.
The Arts and Crafts Fair is
always a crowd-pleaser. Located
at the Canadian Elementary
School the Fair will be open on
Saturday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
and on Sunday 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
Quilters and quilt-lovers will en-
joy the Quilt and Afghan Show
held at the WCTU Building on
both days. There is a $2 admis-
sion fee. The hours are 10 a.m.-5
p.m. on Saturday and 1-4 p.m. on
Sunday.
Music lovers will have a chance
to begin the show season for the
Prairie River Musical and
Sing-Along on Saturday night at
the Canadian Middle School Audi-
torium. This event has attracted
quite a following over the last few
years and boasts musicians from
all over the area. The group will
perform at 7:30 p.m.
For those who get hungry, a
Brisket Dinner, sponsored by
Rachel's Little House, will be
served on Saturday at the Cana-
dian Elementary School 11 a.m.-2
p.m. On Sunday a Mexican Din-
ner, sponsored by Sacred Heart
Catholic Church, will be served at
CES from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
Wagon rides will be offered
around town by a group from
Cheyenne, Oklahoma. The
pick-up point is at the Hemphill
County Recreation Complex.
Four-wheeler rides will also be
available at the Canadian River
Wagon Bridge from 1 p.m. till
dusk both days, beginning on the
south side.
The group, "Night Life" will
perform Saturday night at Cana-
dian's City Hall for the pleasure of
all the dancers, toe-tappers and
music lovers. The annual Fall Fo-
liage Dance will begin at 9 p.m.
and lasts until 1 a.m.
