question relative to their lands, My mind is made u^on
^ the subject; but I should be pleased to have 4^my opinion
confirmed by the opinion of a man so well versed in the land
transaction of Texas as you arc, I will without farther pro-
fane proceede an* state the^question as I understand
it, in 1027 some 70 of the inhabitants of the Trinety peti-
tioned the state and general government for a grant of
land, the said land to be located vithin the 10 border leagues,
this petition was granted, and ^jadero was appointed
a commissioner to give them titles, but at the time this
r
gaant was made, settlers were prohibited from settling
on the 10 border leagues but in 1826 "ehelin and co
petitioned for a grant of land on which he was to settle
100 families all of whom was to be german, swis and, Inglish—
in this grant a rovision war; made by which all persons
liveing on said tract were to be received as colonists, pro-
vided they possessed all the qualifications required by that
law, from which I understand they are to be of swis, german,
or English origin, now sir all the petitioners are Americans,
therefore cannot be received as colonists, again sir, at
the time this grant was made, the land granted wa^ intlrely
vacant, and tLe persons settled on the grant belong to no
colony, now I think that the setlers to v,hom this land was
granted are not debared from holding that land, and receiving
another yHKg±HXKKXKpypKHX*KX league as colonists, this is
the question I whl;h to have resolved, if I am not mistaken
a number of the setlers in your colony received a grant of
land similer to This in addition to Their settlement
