Fair Adult Arts and Crafts
competition set for Feb. 27

The Adult and Senior Center
Arts and Crafts Division of the
Starr County Fair will be held
on Wednesday, February 27.
Entries will be accepted at the
coliseum from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.,
and judging will begin at 6:30.
All entries will be on display
on Thursday and Friday,
February 28 and 29, for visitors
to the fair to view. Entries must
be removed between 4:00 and
6:00 p.m. on Friday. Grand
Champion and Reserve
Champion in the Adult and
Senior Center divisions will be
asked to return for the Parade of
Champions on Saturday at 7:00
p.m.
The Adult Arts and Crafts
Division will be divided into
two divisions: Adults (18 years
of age and up) and Adults at
Senior Citizen Centers. All
participants must reside in Starr
County. Each division will have
thirteen categories.
THE FOLLOWING ARE

Category 1, Needlework
(needlepoint, embroidery);
Category 2, Crochet & Knit;
Category 3, Quilts & quilted
items; Category 4. Garments

A Grand Champion and
Reserve Champion will be
named as described in the Arts
and Crafts Guidelines, and they
will be awarded prizes as
determined by the Starr County
Fair Association. They will
receive their plaques at a later
date than the Parade of
Champions, where they will be
recognized displaying their gold
and green Grand Champion and
Reserve Champion rosettes.

The Arts & Crafts Division
Chair reserves the right to close
some categories and open new
categories as needed to1 keep any

no machine sewn items entered,

leather craft or any other craft
better represented by entries that
do not fit in any other category.
Baskets and purses may be
divided into two categories if
needed)
All items will be accepted
from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on
Wednesday. No entries will be
accepted after designated hours
unless special arrangements are
made. All articles must be
removed between 4:00 and 6:00
p.m. on Friday.
All entries must be entirely
the work of the person entering
the exhibit, and items entered
must have been made during the
past year (since the previous
fair) and never before entered.
Each exhibitor is limited to one
entry per category, but they may
enter as many categories as they
wish. There will be a SI.00 fee
charged for each item entered.
Entries should have a card
attached to the lower left hand
corner of the article with the
name of the person entering, the
name of the center (if
applicable), and the category
entered. The entrant may
include his/her age (optional),
hours spent on the project, and
how the craft was constructed (if
from a kit, etc.)
All entries will be tagged
properly upon arriving at the
coliseum. Entry numbers will
be issued to each participant,
and these will be securely

chair will be responsible for
seeing that entries are registered
and tagged and that information
required is included. After
being categorized, entries will
be arranged for judging and

Judging criteria will be
general appearance, time spent,
creativity, and skill mastered.
Judging will be done by a panel
of judges who will award a
ribbon to each entry and select a
Top Winner and Runner-up
from each category. They will
then select a Grand Champion
and Reserve Champion of the
Adult Division and a Grand
Champion and Reserve
Champion of the Senior Citizen
Center adults. Grand
Champions will be selected
from among all the top winners.
Reserve Champions will be
selected from the remaining top
winners and the runner-up in the
Grand Champion category.
The Grand Champion and
Reserve Champion winners in
both divisions will be requested
to attend the Parade of
Champions on Saturday and
should plan to bring their
winning craft to show at the
Parade of Champions. Crafts
will not be auctioned but may be
sold privately.

Ramirez students enjoy 100th day celebration
The 100th Day of School Celebration took place on Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at Dr. Mario
Ramirez Elementary in Rio Grande City CISD. Students brought 100 items, such as: 100 rocks, 100 ,
pecans, 100 marbles, and 100 buttons. They used the items to skip count by 2's, 5's and 10's. The
items were also used in various classroom activities. Students and teachers had an extraordinary day
doing many things in 100 ways!

and Decorated Baking Division
of the chairman for 2008, Mindy
Garza, and to extend our
heartfelt thanks to Elsa V. Lopez

Admittance of entries for the
Baking and Decorated Baking
Division will be on Thursday,
February 28, 2008, rather than
Friday, due to the new Fair
schedule.
All entries must be entirely
the work of the person entering
the exhibit. Entrants must be
members of 4-H and/or Family
& Consumer Science classes.
Pre-registration of each item
must be submitted to the
respective Homemaking/4-
il/FCCLA leader by the pre-
registration date, February 19,
with a $2.00 entry fee per item.
Peewee entrants may register at
the Starr County Extension
Office or with their
club/organization.
An exhibitor may enter every
category, but may enter only one
entry per category It is the
responsibility of the
teacher/sponsor to identify the
category of each entry prior to
pre-registration. Check the
category criteria carefully before
categorizing.
Senior Division entrants are
students in grades 9-12. Junior
Division entrants are students in
grades 3-8. Peewee Division
entrants are students PK-2nd.
All entrants should be students
in Starr County schools (with no
exception of the pre-kinder
students).
No entries will be accepted

Reserve Champion will be
selected from the remaining top

Grand Champion was entered.
All judges may deliberate on the
selection of the Grand
Champions and Reserve
Champions.
The Baking & Decorated
Baking Committee will
determine who enters the
judging area.
All Baking & Decorated
Baking items will be on display,
and no exhibit may be removed
before 5:00 p.m. on Saturday
without notifying the Baking &
Decorated Baking Committee.
Senior and Junior Grand and
Reserve Champion winners will
be required to be present for the™
Parade of Champions ceremony
and for the auction. Top
winners from each category of
the divisions will be present for
the auction only Peewee Grand
and Reserve Champion winnersJ
will be present for the Parade of
Champions only and will not
sell at auction.
The Baking & Decorated
Baking Committee will use all
diligence and every reasonable
precaution to ensure the safety
of all the items after their arrival
and during the exhibition, but in
no case will they be responsible
for any loss or damage that may
occur or for articles not removed
by Sunday.
All judges' decisions art-
final, as are those of the
Division Chair. Any complaints
must be officially filed with the
Starr County Fair Association
Board of Directors as prescribe™
in their guidelines.
