Youth Arts and Crafts contest
setfor 2008 County Fair
RMS students excel at U.I.L. competition
Ringgold Middle School students achieved a strong second place finish at a U.I.I Invitational Meet
held on Feb. 2, 2008 at B.L. Garza Middle School. The RMS students achieved an overall total of 315
points, including six first places. The students who competed are listed in the article on this same page.

combined total of 315 points let
them walk away with a 2nd
place Sweepstakes.

2008 Fair Pageant
Sunday in San Isidro
Relinquishing her crown at
the 2008 Starr County Youth
Fair Pageant on Sunday, Feb. 24
will be Monique Estelle DePau.
Monique reigned at last year's
fair so eloquently along with her
court. The court presents all of
the prizes and awards to the
Youth Fair winner during the
three day event.
Monique is the 18-vear-old
daughter of Rolando and Letts
De Pau of Rio Grande City
The pageant is moving to San
Isidro to bring more enthusiasm
to each of the communities that
are involved in the fair.
Hopefully next year it will be in
Roma depending on community
support.
If you are between the grade
levels of pre-kinder and high
school and would like to
experience the fun and magic of
the longest running pageant in
Starr County, sign up and be a
participant!!
This is not the normal beauty
pageant because this pageant is
set up to encourage and
reinforce the confidence and
natural beauty that is within
each girl I he pageant helps
each girl develop poise and self-
confidence as they walk across
the stage. Participants will have
the opportunity to express
themselves in the selection of
their costume and the smile that

12:00-2:00 p.m.
Judging of Arts & Crafts
entries will be from 2:00-4:00
p.m. Grand Charrpions and
Reserve Grand Champions will
appear at the Parade of
champions on Saturday, March

The Youth Arts and Crafts
Division will be divided into
sixteen (16) categories for the
Senior and Junior divisions.
The chairman will form
categories for Peewees as entries
dictate.
Category 1, Needlework
(needlepoint, embroidery);
Category 2, Crochet & Knit;
Category 3, Quilts & quilted
items; Category 4, Sequined
craft; Category 5, Painted craft;
Category 6, Appliqued craft;
Category 7, Machine sewn items
(not clothing); Category 8, Fland
sewn/hand decorated items;
Category 9, Home accessories;
Category 10, Walldecorations;
Category 11, Door
decorations; Category 12,
Leather craft; Category 13,
Jewelry; Category 14,
Woodwork projects (not
furniture); Category 15,
Machine Sewn Garment;
Category 16, Miscellaneous.
The Youth Arts & Crafts
Division Chair reserves the right
to close some categories and
open new categories as needed
to keep any category from being
too full or too scant. (Example:
if there are no crocheted or
knitted items entered, basketry
may be added if there are
several of these items in the
miscellaneous category.)
All items will be accepted
from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. on
Thursday. Absolutely NO
entries will be accepted after
designated hours unless they
were already waiting in line. All
articles must be removed by
4:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Pre-registration should be
submitted to the respective
homemaking/4-H leaders by the
pre-registration deadline date.
Items not pre-registered will be
accepted but will not entitle the
participant to a bracelet pass to
the fair.
At acceptance of entries, all
entries will have a card attached
to the article with the name of
the person entering, their school
or club, and the category and
division (Sr.-blue; Jr.-yellow;
Peewee-green). Entry numbers
will be issued to each article
entered, and this number will be
securely attached to entries
where they can be easily seen.
Homemaking teachers and 4-H
leaders will be responsible for
seeing that their entries are
registered and tagged and that
the information required is
included.
Another card may also be
attached (optional) in advance
with a descriptive story about
the display. This could include
hours spent on the project, how
the craft was made, if a kit was
used, if it was a first attempt, &
methods of construction.
The Youth Arts and Crafts
Committee will use all diligence
and every reasonable precaution
to insure the safety of all items
after their arrival and during the
exhibition, but in no case will
they be responsible for any loss
or damage that may occur or for
articles not removed at on
Sunday.
NOTE: All entries must be
entirely the work of the person
entering the exhibit, and no
entries that have been entered in
any other division of the fair
(example: clothing or art) may
be entered in the Arts and Crafts
Division. Items entered must
have been made during the past
year (since the previous fair) and
never before entered.
Criteria forjudging will be as
follows: general appearance.
time spent, creativity, and skill
mastered.
A panel of judges, who will
award blue, red, or white
ribbons to each entry, will do the
judging. They will also select
the top winner and runner-up
winner from each category and
will choose the Grand
Champion and Reserved
champion in the senior, junior,
and peewee divisions. After the'
Grand Champion is chosen from
the top winners, the Reserve
Champion will be selected from'
the remaining top winners, as-
well as the runner-up in the
category in which the Grand
Champion was entered All Arts
& Crafts judges may deliberate
on the selection of the Grand
Champions and Reserve
Champions.
Display areas are limited, so
no separate displays may be set
up. The committee, not the
individual submitting the entry,
will display items unless their
help is requested (example:
quilts). Submitting entries in a
clear, covered container is
encouraged. Containers should
be no larger than is absolutely
necessary. Clear wrap or dry
cleaning film may be used to
protect items from dust and
touching. All clothing craft-
(sequined, painted, appliqued)
should be entered on wire
hangers to facilitate display.
There will be a S2.00 fee for
each craft entered. Judges'
decisions are final, as are those
of the Division Chair.
If there are at least five senior
entries, there will be a separate
division for Machine Sewn
Garments. If there are at least
five junior entries, there will be
a separate division for Machine
Sewn Garments. If there are at
least five peewee entries, there
will be a separate division for
Machine Sewn Garments.
Category 15 will be removed
from the Arts and Crafts
