A Glimpse into Dallas County Election - 1922
Lawlessness Is Deplored.
"4. We solemnly declare that we deplore all
lawlessness of every character and that we favor
the strict, speedy and rigid enforcement of the
laws against every offender, high or low, rich or
poor.
"We recognize that many times crime runs riot
at lightning speed, while the processes of justice
seemingly go forward with the pace of the
tortoise, moreover, we recognize that there are
some offences against law and morals that are
very difficult of detection and punishment: but,
while fully cognizant of all thee facts, we
nevertheless declare that there is not now, never
has been and never will be any offence against
law, morals or government half so heinous as
the offense committed by the mob which
assumes to take the law into its own hands and
to punish any man, however degenerate, whom
it accuses without Judge, without court or
without a jury and without substantial proof of
his guilt.
"While recognizing the possibility that here and
there the Ku Klux Klan has terrified certain
classes of evidence into inactivity and silence,
we solemnly declare that in each and every case
the remedy is infinitely worse than the disease,
and that mob violence, for any offense under
any circumstances, is a direct dagger thrust at
the very vitals of the Nation and of orderly
government.
"We believe that the Ku Klux Klan, pretending
[huh?] of the people and enforcement of the
laws, is a greater and more dangerous foe to our
Government than any evil it has ever sought to
eradicate.
For Equal and Exact Justice.
"5. We have no war to make upon our neighbors
and friends who have connected themselves
with the Ku Klux Klan. He hold no brief forany man or men, creed or class, as against any
other man or men, creed or class.
"We believe in equal and exact justice for all,
and do and shall regard as inimical to our free
institutions every organization which yields
political allegiance to any foreign power, Prince
or Potentate, and whenever any such
organization, of any class or character, shows its
head in free America, we pledge ourselves to
condemn and denounce it, just as we now
condemn and denounce the Ku Klux Klan.
Interrogate Officials and Candidates.
"6. We register our conviction that, as a result of
this meeting, a permanent organization to be
called the Dallas County Citizens' League,
should be effected, the object of which will be
to carry out the purposes voiced in these
resolutions.
"To that end, we believe that a committee of
nine should be appointed by the chair to
perpetuate this organization: that the chairman
of the meeting, Gen. M. M. Crane, should be
chairman of said committee, and that steps
should be taken by said committee to interrogate
all of our public officials and all candidates for
office concerning their affiliates with or attitude
toward the Ku Klux Klan.
"We believe this committee of nine should be
invested with plenary powers to (not legible) for
this organization, to call additional meetings, to
keep in touch with the people and to perform
such acts and deeds as will perpetuate this
organization until the time again comes to us
when all public officials will owe allegiance
only to the constituted authorities of Texas."Dallas Journal 2006 43
