A Glimpse into Dallas County Election - 1922
9 April 1922
Questionnaire on Klan Being Drawn
PUBLIC OFFICIALS AND CANDIDATES WILL BE ASKED
ABOUT MEMBERSHIPA questionnaire concerning their affiliations of
sympathies with the existence or actions of the
Ku Klux Klan or any similar organization will
be submitted to all public officials and
candidates for public office in Dallas County by
the Dallas County Citizens' League the first of
the week, it was announced Saturday by M. M.
Crane, chairman of the organization that has
declared an open fight upon the Ku Klux Klan
and similar organizations.
The questionnaire is now being prepared, he
said, by a subcommittee of the executive
committee of the league, and will be sent to all
officials and candidates as soon as it is
completed.
The formation of an advisory committee of 100
representative members of the league is also
under way, Mr. Crane said."Our executive committee appointed by the
mass meeting is making progress," he declared.
"Subcommittees have been appointed on
finance and organization, and the preparation of
a questionnaire to officers and candidates as
directed by the mass meeting. That document
will be issued early next week.
"J. K. Hexter has been elected treasurer of the
organization and all remittances by our friends
can be made directly to him.
"An advisory committee of 100 members will
soon be announced. The work of the
organization goes steadily on. Citizens are
every day coming to us and asking that their
names be included in our list of members.
Many of them, as well as many who have not
published their names as endorsers of our
petition, have told us to call upon them for
support, financial or otherwise."11 April 1922
Klan Rejects Mayor Aldredge's Appeal
The News regrets that the Ku Klux Klan has
rejected the appeal of Mayor Aldredge to
disband that organization. It is sure a great
majority o f the people of Dallas do also. For
the consequence of its rejection must be, if it
shall persist in it, the prosecution of the
campaign of opposition already organized and
undiminished energy and determination. And
such a campaign must have the effect of
intensifying the discord and personal
animosities which, as Mayor Aldredge has said,
that organization has already brought into the
city. Deplorable as this must be, in the
estimation of all right-thinking citizens, that
effect is nevertheless to be preferred to the
political domination of an organization whichconceals the identity of its members behind both
a mask and an oath. General Crane, chairman
of the Dallas County Citizens; League, has
answered the address of the klan, and in the only
way that the mission of that organization makes
possible.
In declining to accede to the appeal of Mayor
Aldredge, the klan has thought it expedient to
attempt some defense against the charges that
have been brought against it, and even to admit
the justness of at least one of them by holding
forth the promise and hope of reform. It has
promised that it will not again parade the streets
masked. And it has expressed the hope that its
imperial authorities will vouchsafe permission
to disclose the identity of its members. Of thoseDallas Journal 2006 45
