A Glimpse into Dallas County Election - 1922
But these are lawful sins. Members of the klan
have a lawful right to hate Jew, Catholic and
foreign-born and to propagate that hatred, if
they are moved to do so by the comfort and
profit to be derived from the propaganda. They
are exercising their freedom, albeit a freedom
they owe no little to those whom they thus hate
and upon whom them would bring a political
and social proscription. In doing this they give
no occasion for organized opposition, save as
the proscribed classes may be impelled by a
sense of their danger and self-respect to unite in
their own defense. But in encouraging, if notinstigating, men to commit crimes; in binding
themselves together by an oath which leagues
them against the law by promising concealment
and protection, even to the extent of baffling the
inquiries of grand juries; in seducing public
officials into being recreant to their duty, and in
striving to establish in authority men who will
be obedient to the decrees of a hidden hierarchy
- in doing these things they make an attack on
our institutions which should rally to their
defense all citizens, regardless of race or creed,
who understand and cherish the principles
which vitalize them.13 April 1922
